Submitted by rocky on Thu, 2011-06-23 09:28
HI guys,
heading to port gregory on the 10 july for 5 days, never been there before just wondering is it worth towing my 6m whittley or should i stick to land base fishing this time of year.
when fishing up there what type of fish sould i be targeting on land and boat. and what type of conditions can you fish in, on the inside of the reef in a boat.
Thanks for your help.

its a beach launch at port
its a beach launch at port gregory.
Can be done but really need mats to go under your boat tyres. Also you need to get your boat in and out very quickly.
There is a couple locals who can use their tractor to help you, costs between $50-100 in and out.
Land wise, if the beach is ok, head south along the beach from the jetty until you get to where the reef meets the beacj (you will know what mean when you see it). Just past that there is a good hole in the reef, good for big tailor and soapies.
Also if you head north on the beach uip around the point and another 500-800m up there is some good holes and rips, good for tailor too.
Boat wise, well i drove north to retrieve my boat from Kalbarri, and on the way up found HEAPS of good reef onlny 1-2 mile from shore. About 4-5 mile north of port gregory. Only shallow 6-12 metres, but showed heaps of fish. Possibly Pinkys.
Did all my deep water fishing south, not going to give that spot away in case i go back there :) but lets just say within 5 seconds of everyone hitting the bottom, it was double headers of balides, trout, pinkys and dhu's Getting our bag in 30 minutes.
However a lot of of the time its rough as guts!

good post
good post Bodie! I am also interested in this spot and have heard about good fishing for mulloway and tailor. for $50 to $100 a launch you would want to be getting into some good fish!

Some boats you just cant
Some boats you just cant launch....even with a tractor! here is our attempt.
However we did get a 23ft razorline in and out easily with a cruiser. The beach is pretty hard, btu when you reverse back just gun it until your in far enough. Also we had rubber mats under the trailer.

Beach
As Bodie mentioned 'Nobbys Hole' is very good at the south end of the reef, can be weeded up though. The stretch of beach from there down to the Hut River mouth is also worth a fish. If you want to boat fish you can virtually fish inside the reef in almost any weather- outside is a different story. There is some good ground down to the south out from the cliffs, and the lumps marked out further are worth a crack. We always have fished from a 20ft ali and have never been bogged- glass might be a different story so you may want to drop your tyre pressures and take a couple of mats for your trailer tyres as Bodie mentioned. Sometimes the softest area is right next to the jetty- so if a little dodgy drive a bit further up the beach before launching (depends on how high the winter tides are). If you launch further up the beach you get a bit more of a runup getting off the beach and into the carpark.
Hope the weather gods play ball.

Fished
Fished there years ago mate. Head out thru the hole on the reef, chuck a left and head south down the coast a few miles until you see a big barn/shed up on the hill. We found a heap of nice ledges out from there..and found a lot of nice Dhuis. We fished maybe 3 to 5 miles out.

Interesting
Wouldn't mind launching the kayak from Hutt River mouth and having a go a few k's offshore - in the right conditions of course. That ground north of Port Gregory sounds promising too!
