Good spearing spot to start off

Hi guys. On the long weekend I hope to open my account on spearfishing. Can anyone recommend me a decent spot sort of shallow to start me off?

Cheers in advance.

Not Cockburn Sound

Having read a couple of reports on this site and just seen TVW7 news it would seem that sharks (GWs) have come over to see us in the state of excitment I would not go near the sound at this time and sugest you wait for some good visability.Diver

Where are you based and how far are you willing to travel? Will you have a dive buddy with you? Around Perth it can be hard to find anywhere off the beach where you are allowed to spear, but further north or south you might have a better chance.

In that case grab a chart or plotter and pick the high points off the 5-fathom and you should be able to find somewhere nice to dive. The 5-fathom has plenty of good drop offs, bombies and swim thrus and with a bit of moving around you should be able to find a few fish.

You'll never know what the vis is like from the couch! I've been suprised by good vis during a big swell and crap vis after plenty of flat days. Only way to tell is to get out there and keep moving around if you find mud.

I do agree that Rotto is usually your best bet after a big swell and often the vis is completely different from one side of the island to the other.

Stay on the couch.

2 weeks of solid fronts and 4m+ swells. I was out last Sunday past Rotto and the water was a milky green until you got out past  westend. If you have waited this long to open your spearfishing account, I would wait a little longer. It will be crap.

 Dont listen to them

The viz this weekend was phenomenal

Pt Peron is one of the better metro shore based spearfishing spots, southside is a no spering zone but north is fine

Get in and get wet mate  ;)
