Geo Bay Tuna

Heard a rumor that there was a few tuna being caught in the bay, so I decided to go for a troll early this morning.

Weather was crap and confidence wasn't too high.

After trolling from Castle Rock to Quarries without even a sniff I decided to call it a day and head home.

On the way home I spotted dolphins caving up some bait fish so decided to give it another go.

Within minutes of trolling around the dolphins I was on and sure enough it was a nice tuna.

Caught 6 in all and then headed home with 2 in the eske on ice for a few friends to have a feed tonight.

What's the best way to prepare tuna?

Sat, 2011-02-19 22:51

Nice fish seaquest, and a good result in trying conditions.

How's the best way to cook them....or are they treated just like any other fish? I've never caught one but I can imagine they'd be a handful as they're surely built for speed!

Cook them? What would you

Sun, 2011-02-20 07:23

Cook them? What would you want to do that for ;)

There is a bit of a trick to dispatching them, its good to nick the veins that run under the skin at the pecs, then bleed really well then. Instead of trying to brain spike them through the side of the head, you run the back of a knife down the front of the head and it shows you a lighter-coloured circular patch which is the front entry to the brain, just stab through there. Thats where they put the bit of mono into them that that they run down the spinal column, to wipe out the nerves, but I haven't gotten that fancy yet.

I don't aim on cutting fillets off them. What I do is cut off the head, then the belly, then the skin (in 4 pcs), then you can take 4 loins off. Youtube is riddled with videos on prepping tuna.

The tuna were caught less

Wed, 2011-02-23 06:30

The tuna were caught less than 1km off Bunker Bay.

Look for the bait balls anywhere from Eagle bay to the light house.

Tried again yesterday afternoon with no luck.

There was a lot of brown muck everywhere in close and no bait fish anywhere.

Have heard guys have been getting them at Indicators and Wrights bank as well.

SBT sashimi is one of lifes

Wed, 2011-02-23 21:47

SBT sashimi is one of lifes great pleasures.

Whitey showed my how to get the 4 loins off....cut off the top inch of fish from the head to tail ( dorsal fins) and same on the bottom of the fish. Then cut the fish all the way to the bone on each side behind the head, make a few nicks in the skin top and bottom and pull the skin ff both sides. Then run a knife down the centre blood line top and bottom and the use your thumb to ease the top and bottom loins off, hey presto. Four loins ready for sashimi.

Probably easier getting whitey to show ya!!!!!!!!!!

Definatley need to get tuna

Thu, 2011-02-24 09:11

Definatley need to get tuna on ice for about an hour to cool the flesh. Thye operate at such a high body temp they almost stew themselves if not put on ice immediatley. Then get out the bait knife, cut off a chunk, and down the pie hole.....yum.
