Fishing/Boating 21st December 2013 Advice Wanted

Hi All,

Chasing a bit on advice and recommendation for this Saturday. Not after anyone secret spots or location (though would be great if you could provide some shallow water sambo spots! If you were willing to share).

Weather was looking great at the start of the week, now looking a bit more sloppy. My friends and I are novice boaties with all the safety equipment required.

A bit about the boat - centre console, ally, approximately 5.3 meters in length (fits 4 people nicely). Normally launching from Woodies

Original plan was to hit Rottnest to do some sambo jigging in about 40 meters of water, chasing both sambos, demersals and possibly pelagic. Seems like this plan is out the window.

With the wind blowing up to approximately 16 knots - what are your thoughts and where would you go (from Fremantle). Is-it best to stay in close or is-it still safe to head out to the 40s in the weather predicted on Saturday.

Our thought were to head to stragglers reef or even behind garden for some kgw, skippy (I know there still a ban for Demersals ban in Cockburn).

We are still learning the ropes of boating so any recommendation on where we should go would be great or advice if we should stick in close or keep to our original plan will be greatly appreciated.

Cheers again and looking forward to your responses.

is head out behind stragglers and find pots on the lumps and mark ground. when you have a dozen or so u will have areas to check on future trips. If you find fish drop but best be well clear of the pots

be careful around the stragglers

gday if you go anywhere near the stragglers just sit of the reef breaks and have a good look it can be quiet hairy if you go steaming in there,my advice would be to head out between garden and carnac get yourself in the middle of the channel markers and head west till you find 32mtrs plus and have a scout around the area marking possibilities as you go the wind may be up but check out willyweather, search rottnest island postcode 6161 and it will show you that the swell is dropping right off, safe as houses out there..

keep an eye on the weather

keep an eye on the weather mate. Remember winds at rotto are usually 5 knots stronger than reports around perth ie: Seabreeze.

Pro's have their cray pots out now, worth looking in closer and hunting around these is the winds up, which im thinking it will be as the temperature is down.

Swell is right down, and the wind is an ESE, Turning Southerly just after lunch. It will be white capping and in a centre console you will get wet (I know you will as I've got a CC too).

If you do decide to push over to rotto, I would be going over with the ESE wind, and coming home with the S wind. Best thing to do mate is asses the conditions as you head out, get out around carnac and see what your comfortable with given you guys a new to boating and im assuming new to your boat. If your not 100% sure ALWAYS listen to that and stay in close.

Good advise from Bodie

Best rule I have with boating, especially in unfamiliar waters is "when in doubt cut it out", ie if you arent entirely sure about it, dont do it.

If you do get stuck in wind/chop/swell unexpected, dont try to fang it out of there. Just take your time, especially with a new boat. Soon youl get the feel for the way she handles, and whether she wants to broach etc in a following sea.
