First sambo off the ski

Hey Fellas. Went out around 11 today around carnac island, found small baitfish that was hugging the reef so flicked a few lures around hoping for a sambo or kingy but nothing, so I anchored and burleyd up around half an hour in I hooked my first sambo off the ski on a live herring, it wasn't nothing huge but a rat of around 5kg, then had another livie out what didn't get touched until I started to reel her in then a big sambo came through and smashed it, unfortunately the hooks didn't stick and dropped it, after that all the bait vanished so I did the same.

I was stopped on the Ski last week and checked by Fisheries.

Not only did they check for licence/fish caught, they then checked all the safety gear that I carry, and an anchor is required on the Ski.

So regardless whether you use it or not,you have to have one on board.

I think it was last Monday the coppers pulled me up around the stragglers asking if I had all my safety gear, epirb flares, then retrieving fisheries came over and had alooksies also, from never seeing the fisheries and coppers on the water in 2 years to twice in one day, lucky renewed all the safety gear.

Is it 5nm limit your aloud out on the skis??

seeing the white would be an eye opener for sure, if you have all the safety gear i dont see the problem with going more than 5nm out on a ski. it comes down to experinace on the water. pick your days and have fun if going out that far always handy to have another boat or ski with you and remember to log on and log off.

5NM

Wed, 2013-11-20 14:22

Only applies to WA,

I've chatted to the guys from the eastern states and they go out + 25 kms, furthert I've heard of is 100km's (in the USA) Ironic that a 3.85m canoe is allowed to go out futher than a Jetski in WA.

I've taken mine to Gemini wreck from Ocean reef (about 26 kms, but still only 5nm out).

Cant wait for them to change the law, then we can get a group together and head out.

Still there are plenty of areas close in to fish.

IMO Jetskis are more capable to do ocean duties. I'd be more comfortable taking my ski 5nm+ than a 15hp 3.8m tiller steer.

And regardless of what your vessel in, have all your saftey gear handy
