Emails for Private Messages

Hi Guys,

After just getting another CPU exceeded message which is driving me f$^%#^# nuts, as it must be for you guys to, we are going to disable emails for private messages to see if that kerbs the problem.

[Thur 18 00:06:29 2008] [error] [client 69.89.27.236] 550 SPEED LIMIT: Domain fishwrecked.com has exceeded the max emails per hour (50) allowed.

Cheers,

Adam

Adam - How about, when you

Thu, 2008-09-18 20:21

Adam - How about, when you send a PM, it goes in the form of an email, by passing the site altogether, so you dont have to use up space for the messages? Been on some sites that do that.

New private messages

Thu, 2008-09-18 20:54

You will now notice a new form of private messages.  What I think the problem is that when someone doesn't check their private messages and its set to aggresive notification then its exceeding the maximum allowable amount of emails which shuts down the script and gives a CPU overload message.  If this doesn't fix the problem then I will put the email notification back on.

As for the connection refused issues, hopefully bluehost will resolve that, I've been through the server logs and because there are a lot of sites hosted on the server it appears that some other muppet is causing the crashes.  I have given them an ultimatum to fix it and if not, will be looking for hosting elsewhere, which may require me to move the site and cause a couple of days downtime.  :(

A couple of days downtime is a fair price for these annoying CPU overloads to go away.

Yeah, I know. Obviously, there's not a problem like other sites where PM email has a limit set on it. As for disabling PMs emails i don't have a problem with that.

The problem with computers and, in particular, remotely hosted sites, is, that it's a case of 'process of illimination' and that's very frustrating.

I synpathis with you Adam. Hosting is a challenge and this site by no mean poses any stress problems that I can see with volume traffic. Gives these guys shit and move on if need be. This site is more impiortant that the pricks that host it.

Thanks Vince

Thu, 2008-09-18 21:12

Just gone 3 shades greyer in the last 3 hours and I'm not even 30 yet. SIGH. Driving me bonkers.

I will definately be looking elsewhere tomorrow, only problem is getting someone else reliable. Could just open another can of worms... But yes, this is beyond a joke and I'm that close to telling them to go stick it, mind you, they have been very good for near on 3.5 years so its a bit of a tough one...

I thought dealing with people's personal disputes was bad, but this just takes the cake.

Please bear with me, I'm trying to fix it. Cry

Co-located

Fri, 2008-09-19 00:39

A co-located server is about $600 per month which is our own box at the host. There are other options such as VPS (virtual private server) which is a mid step, but the problem is knowing how much ram is needed and the price is scaled up heavily the more you require. With such a significant amount of data stored it could easily blow my budget outa the water as I have enough trouble just paying the bills up here without even considering what that may cost.

I'm pretty sure the disabled emails for PM's will resolve the CPU issues. I'm just waiting on bluehosts story on the connection refusals and hopefully if they get their act into gear it will be resolved by tomorrow as well. (If they bloody well respond to me that is...)  I have done a tracert and it doesn't seem to be anything along the path so must be their apache box on their end which is getting busted up by some nooblah trying to do something they shouldn't causing our individual server to restart constantly. SIGH.

There's nothing more frustrating that a no response from some party you're trying to get a solution from. Especially in your case. I hope they get it sorted out for you Adam.

PHARK

Fri, 2008-09-19 14:59

What I cant figure out is why it has only started happening in the last 4 days.  We have tried modifying and streamlining functions within the site which had it ok for a few hours, now it seems to be borked again.

I am now looking at alternative hosting servers, which I think I have found one and will be looking to move over early next week all things going according to plan.

Sigh, sorry crew, will get it fixed as soon as possible.

Ok

Fri, 2008-09-19 15:29

No probs guys, unfortunately theres not much I can do about it until early next week. Just going to have to grin and bear it. If you are going to post up a long post, make sure you copy it so you can paste it in the text box if it drops out.

I've just bought the new hosting, gone from $150 per year to $1800, but will be on our own server. I will alert you all to when we are moving the server over as there will most likely be a day of downtime.

Cheers,

Adam

Last try

Fri, 2008-09-19 16:03

Last try is removing the random images as it has such a huge pool of images to choose from it takes a lot of memory to select which is going to be displayed. Especially when you consider that it has to rotate randomly for each user on every page that is browsed.

When we go to the new server I will put it all back on and return the site back to its original look.

Let me know if this resolves the problem in the mean time. I have only had one connection refused since the first changes this morning, but from your comments, still seems to be a problem. Hopefully this has reduced its frequency for the time being.

If this doesnt work, I suggest you all go to the pub and get blind, just like I'm going to be doing.  Will make me feel better until the morning.

Cheers,

Adam
