Drift baits

Was just wondering how people go about drift baiting. When sending the bait down do you leave the bail arm over for a while waiting for it to hit the bottom? flick the arm over and lift it a meter or so off the bottom?
Also fishing in around 10-20 meters of water wondered what size sinker is best, in say a slow/medium paced drift?
only new to this and didn't have much success with it over the weekend.. had 5 big squid hit the bait but dont think it was getting to the bottom.
Cheers,
Jamie

Myself , I use the least
Myself , I use the least amount of weight possible , no weight at all if you can.
Bail open , feeding line out with your hand, whilst trying to keep the line straight as poss to the bait.
If I spent half as long fishing , as I do reading this bloody forum , I'd be twice the fisherman I am.

Small overheads and
Small overheads and baitcasters are best for this style of fishing as you can just put them in freespool and keep in direct contact with the line using your thumb to control the descent. Hope that helps :) And yes unweighted is best otherwise a small bean or ball sinker if in deeper water.

thanks guys for the tips,
thanks guys for the tips, have just made up a few different ones all with different weights. i like the idea of putting a crimp around about 300 mm from the top hook just so it doesn't cause any tangles with the swivel.
Kinga i think i might have to invest in a small bait caster reel, always used mainly spins with a few overheads but i like the idea of the bait casters and seem perfect for drift baiting, also very easy to use!
