Dory or ???

Ok guys more help needed.

I'm finally in a position where I may be able to purchase a decent boat. Now I'm not talking a monster ocean going liner, I've set my sights a little lower. I'm thinking a Dory or something of similar size. Thing is I'd like to know what else is available. Must be high sided with a deep hull, 4.2m minimum. Would mainly be used in the sounds & venture further out on those rare days when it's flat.

Any ideas? Who else makes an open tinny worth looking at?

Budget will make a difference

but if you can afford it steer away from Quintrex or Stacer and have a look at other brands like Stessco, Stessl and Clark.

Alot more solid construction, higher sides and  better layouts, IMO.

Bermuda 420 Salmon.

Tue, 2011-05-31 23:58

I bought my Bermuda 410 Salmon (now called 420 Salmon) with 40hp Mariner 4 stk electric tilt for $12000.00 in 2003. Absolutly brilliant tinnie for inshore and in nice conditions offshore work. Has high sides and a false floor. I have personnaly added extruded side decks, front casting platform, rear ladder and side pockets.  I posted some pics of it on FW a while ago.

Used it for Barra fishing in Darwin, Cockburn Sound, Bremer Bay, Geographe Bay, off Canal Rocks, Geraldton and Lefroy Bay. Everything from trolling, to drift fishing, jigging, anchor burlying and river work.

Unfortunatl for me now i use my Dads 5.8m Ally i dont use the old 410 much. So selling it to my brother up in Katherine at the end of the year.

I believe Adam also used to run a 410 Salmon up in Exmouth?

are they not the same hull......? stessco are a good boat but your get what you pay for, with that budget i would be buying (if you want an open tinny) a 460 dory with a 50/60 yam on the back but its your preferance in the end

cheers

Thanks for the input guys, there's a few to choose from hey?  Stessco seem cheap enough as a package deal, but I've always liked the look of the Dory.  Too many choices.

Dory

Thu, 2011-06-02 13:18

Have a dory myself 4.2, sweet little boat for its size. Had a pretty extensive look around when i was purchasing bout a year ago. I think stessco and allycraft(??)have a 3mm bottom which was a plus for a tinny, dory had a 2mm and I didn't like the stacers only because the riveted thwarts turned me off. Only problem for me was i wanted to package it together myself so i could shop around to get exactly what i wanted and to keep the cost down, and hull only in those boats from memory cost a bit extra.

As stilly said with that budget I'd go for for something bigger like the 460 if you want an open boat layout. Thats the only thing I'd change on mine is little bit bigger. I think from memory the dory 460 hull was around $5500 from site sponsor boat business and the can package it together with mariners and suzi's for a pretty competitive price.

Just for comparison ended up putting mine together for just under 9 1/2k with trailer, hull, yamaha 30hp 2st(non CV), full barwork with large step, ladder and transducer bracket, full electrics and all the bits and pieces for fitout. without the barwork and extras it would've come in just over 8 grand

Thanks for that. 460 is a tad

Thu, 2011-06-02 19:12

Thanks for that. 460 is a tad large for the space I've got for storage, I think 445 is gonna be max. I am more than capable of doing the fit out myself, so you're right, that would save some dollar.

I'm gonna take my time with this & do more research, but I'm a bit impulsive so I'll have to resist the urge.

Nice work fisher king! Good

Wed, 2011-07-06 10:54

Nice work fisher king! Good price you got it for too!

I have absolutly loved my 2003 410 Salmon, spent $5000 doing mods and upgrades on the hull. Taking it on its last fishing trip with me next week before it leaves to its new home up in the N.T(selling it to my brother). If you ever want some ideas sling me a PM and i can email you all the details of mods i did to improve its fisherbilities

Very able boat, taken it everywhere from originally the N.T rivers and harbours after Barra to offshore Bremer Bay, off the Capes , off Perth(4nm out), and up at Ningaloo. About to hit the coral coast in in next week after some Mega Tailor and inshore Dhui's. Hopefully i get one last good run on my pride and joy.
