doing up trolling minnows

Hey guys,

Just thought i would share this with you.

After watching the tackle rigging videos on the nomad sportfishing webiste http://www.nomadtackle.com/nsatackle_riggingvid_minnow_sportfish.htm i decided i would have a go at changing the trebles on a couple of lures, that were a bit damadged and rusted after our recent shark bay trip, for singles and back to back singles.

The first one is an x-rap 20 which i put 2 5/0 mustard live bait hooks back to back with a cable tie holding them together, and a 7/0 mustard live bait hook at the back. the split rings on the back are both the original ones from this lure, and the one on the middle is a hyperwire 7.

I then pulled the rusted and bent hooks off this laser pro 190DD, which accounted for 90% of fish caught trolling during the 2 week trip. The hooks are 7/0 gamakatsu O' shaughnessy rigged back to back on hyperwire 7s' with 2 cable ties to stop them from moving.

The reason i used these hooks is that they were in my tackle box, but the reason they were in my tackle box is they are strong and have worked well in other applications before.

One thing i noticed is the eyes of the hooks are tight on the split rings which restricts the hooks movement slightly, are there any hooks with bigger eyes which would be better for this?

Has anyone else tried fitting there lures like this, and if so with what results?

I cant wait to give them a go next time im out on the blue, as ive heard whispers that the southern bluefin are back.

The reason for me changing the hooks.

Also i seem to have destroyed my cheap surecatch split ring pliers while doing this, can anyone reccomend a good quality pair of split ring pliers for opening all sizes of rings? (mainly 6-9 hyperwires).

Thanks for reading,

                            Rob

I'd get hooks with inline

I'd get hooks with inline eyes rather than using two split rings in a row, the eyes are bigger as well. Try Decoy Sargeant or Owner Stingers.

Cable ties

Those cable ties won't last long, but probably doesn't matter as long as the don't change the way the lure swims. I usually upgrade by trebles to a vmc 3x strong and never come close to straightening them on 80lb braid. But the single hooks will make it easier for a catch and release if that's what you want

mate i use a bakers rig (what you have done there) oftn with GT's, particularly with stick baits, a very strong rig.  if the cable tie breaks so what, they are cheap.  They are designed only to hold the hooks opposed for the strike, if they do that and get you a fish then they have done there job.

in terms of split ring plies there are heaps on the market like this type, they are all good and will last you a bloody long time

yeh when targetting tuna its

yeh when targetting tuna its mainly catch and release, and only keeping one if we have no luck on demersals, as ive found they dont keep to good.

till and rig i plan to do a couple more lures in different ways to see which works best so i will give the decoys and stingers a go and if i start getting too many fish hitting the lure and not hooking up i will try some VMC 3x strong trebles.

pilbrabrad well if its good enough for GTs' it will be more then adiquate for a humble 8kg SBT ;)

oceanside i will hopefully be in before i go away to bali to get those pliers, a new 2-3 PE jigging rod, some more jigs and terminal tackle, see you soon.

I use the Owner split ring

Tue, 2011-07-19 11:07

I use the Owner split ring pliers and cannot fault them, right through to #11 owner splits. My advice though would be to coat them in RP7/CRC before their first trip.

You can rig the tail hook with two split rings with a swivel between them. This way if the fish twists, the swivel lets it do so rather than it torquing the hook out of the mouth of the fish. This is how I have rigged for GTs, but probably overkill for SBT.

When asked by a non-fisherman 'how many fishing rods do you really need?' the correct answer is either:

n+1 (where n is the number of fishing rods you currently own); or

n-1 (where n is the number of fishing rods which would cause your significant other to dump you.
