D9 questions

Hi my name is luke im geoff(gpc123)'s son. We were out in cockburn sound fishing today for some pink snapper (unfortunately didnt catch anything at all) and i have heard about the D9 and i was just wondering what it is and how it got there. If anyone knows i would be happy to hear it.

Thanks, Luke

Aliens did it.

Sat, 2008-09-27 19:32

It used to be a communication station for aliens crossing into our Galaxy, but the Wookies shot it down and it landed in Cockburn Sound.

Considering i chose Luke Hodge for Best player for the GF, and had to drink 5 shooters if he got it, and he did, thats a pretty reasonable explanation.....

Hi Luke,   From Perth

Sat, 2008-09-27 19:41

Hi Luke,

From Perth Scuba

GPS Coordinates:

S 32°01.145, E 115°32.872

Dive Info:

The D9 is one of the barges used to dredge the sound for shipping, she is around 50mtrs long and penetratable, but be wary, siltout IS a danger, so do it wisely!

From VOC Historical Society

D9 DREDGE (1962)

Formerly known as the Parmelia, it was built as a bucket dredge during the 1930's. Renamed D9 when sold to the Dredging Industries of Australia, she was converted to a suction dredge for the excavation of the channels of Kwinana. Sunk in 1962 for unknown reasons and was then moved to the middle of Cockburn Sound where she is now located.

cheers,

Paul

Are you sure these co-ords are correct? I have double checked them and it is telling me the wreck is closer to Rottness than cockburn sound like i thought I had previously heard??

Thats where my very nice large plow anchor came from. Couldn't believe my eyes when I saw it sitting on the bottom.

It's not 50 metres long anymore, and is very lifeless at times.

wonder why coral hasnt grown on it?

i,ve dived the swan like 30 times, watched its progress from a new massive piece of steel to what it is now..it lies in a bed of sand, and it is pretty good now..

there WAS a resi blue groper for a cple yrs massive kingies/yellow also

loads of crays under the rudder, cple hammerheads, and rumours of a tiger

in summer.. doubt it, prob was a mako , won,t be long before mr .white shows his head.

he and his mrs live only a cple kms away..

the flatheads down in 32m are massive, so are the kg..

i,ve seen a cple big dhues inside the ship ..

pretty cool dive.. i have taken a few mates thru (my tour) OF IT ..lol

thru the laundry shutes and missile storage.. pretty cool dive,

ps.. ( i live in the bridge) you can always find me sittin at the wheel..haha

Sat, 2008-09-27 20:30

hey Harro I know you can't fish around the swan....but are you allowed to snare crays?

never thought about diving for crays on the inside, something to think about. I think with the V5 closure, I'll be doing alot more diving this year, start carrying three tanks each and I think I'll switch to nitrox

Luke, the D9 is a pass for me re pink snapper. PPL say they get snapper from there but that's normally the other wreck (often confused) on the contour line which is not a bad spot...less anchor loss also!

An old guy who shops with me said he worked on that D9 boat many years ago and said there was another rival contracter for dredging and they beleive the other boat sunk it ....so he says?!?

Most peopl that have been fishing the Sound have been getting bugger all so your not alone. I've been out a fair few times and whilst i've only got a few its very quiet. I'm seeing a shit load of boats but no pink things coming up! Seen a few other guys that normally do well also but zip.

The temp in the Sound is too cold for the pinks at this stage re big numbers coming in & firing. Fisheries want me to carry out a new study but they reckon its too quiet and will wait for things to pick up...roll on warmer waters!

The ban is on at the right time, took them a while but they've got it right!

cold!

Mon, 2008-09-29 13:31

No probs mate, yeh very cold indeed. I'm recording 15.1 to 16.1 max over the last 4 trips. No wonder why they're thin atm, need that temp up and then they'll stream in!

 and i thought global warming

Wed, 2013-05-22 21:49

and i thought global warming was sending all our fish down that way! GPC123 and Dad, make sure your favourite footy team is playing on the day, fill the beast up and drive around after studying some maps. I'm not a local but you cna be sure after reading posts on here i'd probably steer clear of D9. learn to read that sounder and feel the satisfaction that comes from fidning that little bit of reef/contour line that is holding fish that becomes your own little D9 spot.

All the best fellas and i only hope one of my daughters is as keen as you gpc123 when they are 12!

bloody apple keyboards are too small for my sausage fingers!!!
