Ciguatera Disease

Hi, I read a post containing this word (Ciguatera) and thought I would google it. Fasinating stuff, wonder if I have this desease lying dormand as I have eaten some of the spesies mentioned below. Never got sick though. I guess the fish I ate did not have the disease. What amzes me is that there are so many common species that could potentially have the disease.  Any of you guys caught it before? Wondering how bad it realy feels when you get it?  Below is a Quote of the web page and here is the link, http://www.holistichealthtopics.com/HMG/ciguatera.html#Ciguatera%20-%20General%20Description%20and%20Incidence

Spanish mackerel
Dog tooth tuna
Skipjack tuna
Pacific kingfish
Barracuda
Trigger fish
Jacks
Snapper(Lutjanidae)
Various species of cod or groper
Sea bass
Barramundi

Reef shark
Moray eel
Coral trout
Dolphin fish
Trevally
Sea perch
Parrotfish
Surgeon fish
Yellowtail
Mullet
Pigeye shark

Of these fish, large carnivorous reef inhabiting fish such as the barracuda are generally considered the most toxic species ( 2, 9, 11,18, 26 ) although pelagic fish like the Spanish mackerel seem to cause the most outbreaks of ciguatera ( 18 ) Some fish, such as red bass ( bohar snapper ) and paddletail, may be banned from sale in some localities

The guys on the island here said there have been a few cases here at Groote. Mainly people eating big coral trout. They go by the rule up here, the bigger/older the fish..the more of the toxins in has in its system. Reef fish over 80cm go back, as well as the big mackies.

In Vanuatu where Ciguatera

In Vanuatu where Ciguatera is prevalant the Local Nivan people cut a small pice of flesh out of the Reef fish & leave it on a table. If the flies attack it it is ok to eat, if flies stay away then throw the fish away as it has Ciguatera.

there actually have been a couple of reports of it in wa, but only far north, and only 2 or 3 confirmed cases. one guy wrote about it in western angler a good few years ago (i think he was on the north star boat), and how much it screwed him up.

generally, its only qld and darwin / NT that have the issues with it. as wade said, the bigger the fish, the more chance of it having the toxin.

In my job

I have to know about this. I will get a statement from a Toxocologist and post it, but as far as I am concerned not a problem in WA, a possible problem in NT and a problem in Qland. Never a southern issue.

Cheers

Neels

Thanks for that guys, better safe than sorry. I think I will let the big ones go back if I should ever be so lucky to catch one. After a picture though. Will be interesting to see what the toxocology report says, Thanks neels,

Info

Tue, 2010-08-10 08:42

It does not and has not happened in WA. If a case has been reported it is usually a tourist who got it in so far Fiji, and mild.

There has been 2 cases in the last few years in Australia, both from Fiji.

Never a reported true case from WA, and extremely rare in NT.

Straight from a Toxicologist (Not Dr Peter Dingle)

Sun, 2010-08-15 13:55

I ate a Spanish Mackerel in New Caledonia that contained ciguatera but the levels in my system weren't high enough for me to notice the effects of the toxin. The guides felt it though as they have higher level built up in their system.

Ate heaps of big Chinaman fish up here in the NW and feel safe doing so.

I used to work around Gove peninsula in the NT and they had areas that had it. The bigger the fish the more chance you have that you'd get sick.
