The guys in Hawaii use to use them when I was there 30 years ago, but they do tear off ending up in the ocean. At that time no one really cared, but times have changed.
Yeh, on school camp in year 10 we traveled through the georges in kalbarri, and i decided to bring a handline. Saw a school of fish but had no bait or lure, just a pre-rigged handline (sinker, swivel and hook). so i put a bit of tin foil on the hook and jigged it through the school and caught them like crazy, one after another. not sure of the species but they were average aroung 1kg each
