Boating checklist

So after the recant purchase of a boat, I've realised things aren't quite coming second nature yet and I've already found myself forgetting to put the bung in on the last trip out... it wasn't till I was standing in water that I realised! On a positive note I did get to test the bilge pump out, and it works! haha... but come on, who hasn't forgotten the bung atleast once in their lifetime!?!?!

Just wondering what things people would suggest putting on a checklist for departing in a boat and also returning home. Things like checking the bung is in.... checking you have the winch handle for your trailer. And then when getting back in.. turning your sounder and radio off.

What else?

my bung and my lead rope are together so i will never forget my bung,

but i have lost a winch handle on our old barron, forgot to take it off after launching, must of fallen off while i parked the car.

problem solved now, it is bolted on.

i have also see a few boats launched and then they relize they have no keys..

my keys stay with my sounder and the first things to  go in the boat in the morn

Sat, 2010-11-20 21:02

I always put the bungs in before I leave home. Have all my electronics, safety gear etc on one shelf in the Linen Cupboard so dont usually forget anything. Boat is on the water most weekends so dont have battery issues.

Stays put

Sat, 2010-11-20 21:03

If the bung is taken out it gets put straight back in--self draining deck so water shouldn't get in there.

Sounder and Gps are built in, safety gear lives under the skippers seat where the original inboard diesel used to sit and key doesn't leave its slot.

All that is needed is to turn the breaker switch on and its ready to go, already fueled up because thats done on the way home on the last trip.

Licences

Sat, 2010-11-20 21:50

All the necessary licences live in my wallet and that along with the car keys and phone are the last things to come aboard at the ramp and the first things off.

one thing to try is to have a spare key on the car keys so if you do forget the boat keys you have one with you. yeah them bungs can be a pain, forgotten them once or twice.

Sun, 2010-11-21 06:29

All about getting into a routine. My bungs go in when I tilt the motor up. I turn my GPS on before I leave home and make sure I have chart in and it's got position. Check fuel and oil before leaving, to do this I need my keys. All safety gear and licences remain on board. After a few months it all becomes habit. Another thing is always take your muffs off after washing your motor. My mate forgot the other day and left them on when he went out. Lucky he has got a heat alarm on his motor or he probable would of cooked it.

yes I can vouch for some shrapnel for the ticket machine.

I just have a waterproof bag that I leave everything in- sounder, keys, torch, EPIRB and any expensive gear you don't want to leave in the boat, then chuck your wallet, keys, phone in and it's all in one grab bag so you're not running around the house remembering things.

Bungs go in before I leave home, that's part of my trailer hooking up routine, and don't forget to isolate the batteries when you're home.

Beer...camera...landing net...Done.

When living in Perth I forgot the bungs in my 565 Haines.... Fills up pretty quick too.

Also did it at willie ck in the tinny.... That was abit of fun...Also caught my 1st Barra that day.

Also forgot the keys at Ocean Reef Marina once when it was packed out 6 in the morning... embarrassing.

Ive heard stories of people leaving the ear muffs on after washing up and nearly cooking the motor next time they went out too..

Everything stays in

Sun, 2010-11-21 08:23

our boat, hook up, break down area at the club, bung goes in stern & bow rope given to me then he backs down and in the water. The only things we have to put in the boat are food, camera, phone and bait.

We decided to go crabbing last year, boat in water, said to old fart where are the floats, ^%$#@ words later, tied up on the over night pens and guess who had to go home to get floats (lucky we are only 9klms away), he's also forgotten the key as well & bait.

Sun, 2010-11-21 10:51

for the trip home it's the following.

Rods on the deck and stored, Antenna's down, loose material secured, all electronics off, bungs out, travel lock on motor, safety chain on the front, tie down strap on the rear, brake off, tow hitch in order and a cold beer for the drive home.

I'm pretty anal when i get to the ramp and leave but i've only stuffed up once and yes it was the dreaded bung left out, quick retrieve and empty and away we went.

it was hard work pulling a 4.1m polycraft full of water back on the trailer thats for sure

spare boat keys

Sun, 2010-11-21 14:10

as said beofe it gets routine amd you need a standard plan

i take all of my gear out after a trip, and as Bruce said i always fold down aerrials and dont leave rods in o/head rocket launcher because of tree damage.  when loading the boat i have all safety gear sounder  GPs laid out then install and put in its right place, i have spare boat keys with my Eprib and flares just in case, i have a couple of spare bungs but the one i use i have a bung drain plug adjacent the bait board on the rear deck which i take out and put in hull bung hole, i then raise my motor whilst in the same spot ready for launch, when i have launched if theres a bung in the bait box drain plug in easy sight i know straight away that i havent put the hull bung in.  always have some spare tools and plenty of rope in case you damage you nornmal anchor line

Mon, 2010-11-22 14:39

I always pack a bottle of water and at least a mars bar. Even on a short trip.

We just went jet skiing up on the gold coast and my wifes group got stuck on a sand bar for about 30 minutes after a long day. She had a bottle and water and a mars bar between her and my daughter and some guy offered her $50 bucks for the pair..

Mon, 2010-11-22 20:33

Fully charged battery and spare are always on the top of my list before I go out.

Nothing sucks more than having a flat batt out of the water... forgetting the bait or bung could be worse haha.

Havent really forgotten any

Wed, 2010-11-24 16:58

Havent really forgotten any boat stuff. About the only things that dont stay on the boat is the fishing gear and the sounder. Keys are easy being a pull start (and so far I have not left my right arm at home).
I rarely go through a mental list, but bungs are always in (something I dont tend to forget). Though, did get to the ramp one time with only one bung in (wtf) and the other not to be found. I keep two spares, so was no problem.

However, I am rather good at forgetting dive gear Sealed. I always pack it the night before, and go through a list, but last time my wetsuit was wet on the line, so missed getting picked up in the morning, doh!

Also forgot my fins last year Yell

On the plus side, the maximum I ever forget something is once ;)

Food + water = always a good idea. You can leave a liter bottle on, and some museli bars anyways (though i stock up each trip).
