Is this a boat sale scam ?

He wants to pay part in cash and part with gift cards (from work) and the boats "for a friend".
Seems a bit odd, but may be legitmate, I cant say either way.

Have mix of pre paid visa gift card/eftpos card (can be used at any eftpos terminal as normal at any retailer, comes with credit balance check and PIN number paper work for authenticity. Received through work). Mainly looking at retailers for ease of eftpos but thought he would check gumtree too. Roughly half cash half prepaid eftpos card total upto $18,000.
