It's a moving sand bank

Fri, 2018-11-30 20:48

It's called dunga island birds crap all over it.waste of time and money. They made it 1 million times worse years ago when they pumped sand onto pengo island trying to save beach there. How many people remember the good old safety bay jetty. Picture in your mind where it was. Have a look now. Would be high and dry by hundreds of feet. Go towards pengo sand ramp . Has never changed. ( old nun place)But let's waste more money on something that will never be fixed.and will always be high maintenance . Just a no brainer in my books. Years ago it use to be a good solid 20 min row to sand bank. Next ten years it will be built on . You can not beat or alter what will happen. 2 words ( dumb ass) .

This will be a very interesting: The Rockingham Council is going to use a long reach Excavator to dig out the Channel, then use trucks driving along the beach all the way to the Carlisle Beach Launch Ramp.

They will be closing this Ramp,so the trucks can take the sand away!  Hmmmm.

Carlisle Street Boat Ramp Closure

Please be advised the Carlisle Street Boat Ramp and carpark will be closed for the duration of the Bent Street Navigation Channel and Tern Bank Sand Excavation works due to operational safety needs.

Recreational users will be redirected from the Carlisle Street sand ramp to the sand ramp at Donald Drive.

Access to Bent Street Navigation Channel, Bent Street boat launching facility and Donald Drive sand ramp will remain open for the duration of the works.

If we are going to continue

If we are going to continue to use the ramp they need to dredge the ramp and a channel through to the markers. Excavating a small area of the sandbar isn't going to help much. Waste of money need a permanent fix for a ramp in the area.

From my understanding the council did complete a study into upgrading the sand ramp between Donald Drive and June Road however that would require a breakwater/marina and from memory costings came in at around 9 million dollars.

Creating a marina there would only create new issues in relation to sea weed/sand build up etc. Plus the fact that there's only about twenty metres between the road and the actual beach there's no room for parking or any additional infrastructure.

The council have to work in with a whole pile of restrictions from other govt entities, environmental concerns, rate payers that whinge about higher rates etc. - bashing the crap out of them continually doesn't achieve anything.

Clearly there's no easy answer to the issue - we live in a city that is growing, boating is getting more popular and the topography of the area is changing due to a whole range of factors - it's not the friggin councils fault!

Wait til they start charging us to use the ramps we do have - the whinging then will be deafening.

Rockingham is hardly an "Aquatic Playground" if there isn't a serviceable / safe boat ramp on the south side

Mon, 2018-12-03 12:44

Wouldn’t they be better of giving up on the bent St ramp altogether and investing the money in expanding long point boat ramp. At a minimum they could double the width of the existing ramps so the drive on guys could use the outer ramps and everybody else could use the inner ramps with the jetty. Or better yet, double the ramps and install another two jetties either side. Two ramps for launching and two ramps for retrieving.

If you google warnbro sound J.S Rowe you will find his report and maps about Peel Harbour (used to be inside Warnbro sound) form back in the mid 1800s. It was a problem then so why bother wasting money on it now.

My point exactly, however any more than 1.5m swell at the PK ramp and the surge makes it too dangerous and difficult to retrieve. PK ramp would need a breakwall.

Your right, surge can be a pain in the ass. Had a close call one morning, launching in the dark, had the boat half way off the trailer when a wave picked it up and wedged it past my winch post and up against the jetty. This I can live with but the knobs swimming around the jetty are the biggest problem. Ive had mobs of people swimming at the jetty not willing to move, after a lot of yelling they finally move only to find a toddler with floaties left in the water half way up the jetty with nobody looking after them. Ive had kids swimming around the boats as they are coming and going, crab nets in my prop, countless hooks dragged across the deck and cab. Push bikes and deck chairs clogging up the jetty with no room to get past, the list goes on.

Tue, 2018-12-04 10:38

They have just recently put a tiny sign up on the light post next to the ramp stating no swimming around ramp but nobody seems to give a shit. Every afternoon you will find all the cars parked in the rigging lanes and reversing lanes. Also seen a car with a boat trailer parked on the ramp with no boat in sight. Biggest problem is with the design as they have made the ramp the main entrance to the beach so you will get people parking on the ramp while the unload bbqs, gazebos, etc. The ramp and jetty are excellent, seabreeze not really a problem, just the surge.

I don’t think a break wall will do the job as the sand comes from the south. There used to be a groyne in the middle of the sound which was removed years ago. Before they removed it, the sand on the south side was almost at the end of the groyne but on the north side it was way back close to the dunes. Once it was removed, all the sand ended up at bent street ramp area.

Mon, 2018-12-10 20:30

Was out their kitesurfing today, excavator getting it done quite fast I thought. Alot of sun bleached weed from the low tides and exposed to the sun.

Sand bar off the back changed dramatically aswell, pretty much a sheltered bay off the back with the sand bar blocking the Southerly winds.

Smells like shit and water looks filthy

Sat, 2018-12-15 22:53

Long point ramp is the go but any swell and it is dangerous also very dangerous when i launch at 4am to go for an early fish and have crack heads hassling you. Having.jet skis all park up next to the jetty and drive in circles near the ramp doesn't help either when trying to get boat on trailer
