Was ok last week, but this weeks blow has stirred it up heaps. My neighbor got a couple at GI today though, but pretty average size.

we got a mixed bag really, i was expecting the little ones with maybe a 15cm hood which are the ones i love but we got 5 of the 8 all big ones around the 25-30cm hood length, also got one the same size as my squid jig too which was interesting.

Was staying out of the wind, close to an island using placies to try and get some interest (one cod and just size Coral trout the result)

Plenty of squid but the Mrs wasnt interested to get a few, so landed 3 for bait. Basically got one, used as bait, recast, got one etc.

I think if we went squidding instead could have got an easy feed. 10m, Orange Japanese jig (cant remember the brand but think it was a Hirumitshu)

Neels

Went Thursday around mussel farms and causeway GI and caught 7 all good size 20cm tubes but was a bit murky (3.5m swell). Orange was the best colour although did get one on red yo zuri with abalone shell troling with the Minn Kota.

Went yesterday in Rockingham,

Mon, 2012-04-23 13:08

Went yesterday in Rockingham, got 7 pretty good ones in 2 hours in 5-6mtrs of water... i probably let about another 7 get off the jig. Was just using the cheap $2 jigs.

I got a few other questions about squiding:

1. I read an older post about the cheap jigs vs the expensive ones... is there any mid priced jig worth trying? (say $10)

2. I mainly use a handline when squidding but noticed yesterday that I lost a few because I wasn't really giving it any drag. Eg. They would just pull their tentacle off. Do you guys favor using a rod or handline?

 I’ve been testing a few

Mon, 2012-04-23 13:20

I’ve been testing a few methods of late with two rods in holders and one casting, one of the rods in the holder has a cheap jig and the other two exxy ones. The cheap jig in the holder catches basically nothing while the exxy jig in the holder seems to catch a little better than the one casting which I thought was strange given its covering less ground but I suppose it proves you can be a lazy squider and not affect your catch rate.

I much prefer using rods as the rod gives you some give plus like you have realised the drag is essential as the big ones can pull hard.

fork out the extra $ you wont

Tue, 2012-04-24 09:40

fork out the extra $ you wont be disappointed, i prefer a light 1-4 or 2-4kg rod and 1000/2000 size reels, 6 or 8lb braid, and 8 or 12lb fluorcarbon leader, try ebay the jigs will cost about $15 plus $5 shipping but if you buy half a dozen it works out a bit cheaper from combined shipping. (about the same as buying locally but its just easier for me to armchair shop) if you want any tips on colours pm me, about to place another order of jigs myself. yo-zuri/duel, yamashita, daiwa, shimano all make some nice jigs, theres alot to choose from, you can never have to many.
