Another fuggin shark attack

I just had a frantic phone call from a real good workmate that was surfing at wedge island this morning... the poor bloke was surfing with a few other unknown guys, when a 5m white attacked and killed a surfer about 10m away from him.

the dude is still missing, and him and a few guys are stopping others going into the water.

Agreed, which is why I said

Agreed Carnarvonite, which is why I said DECENT tagging program (ie satellite) - which could give some useful & accurate info on the movement of individual sharks.

Satellite

Tue, 2012-07-17 09:33

Satellite tags only work when the shark comes to the surface so it leaves huge gaps in where it is located.

If you get a chance, get hold of the series Shark Men, where they capture white pointers and fit them with satellite tags, very interesting watch first off but becomes repititious after a while.

Yep, but at least satellite

Tue, 2012-07-17 11:52

Yep, but at least satellite would have detected a shark in most attacks - i.e. Cott, Mullaloo, Wedge etc which all had surface activity.

Then IF the shark was tagged, then they'd easily be able to identify if it was the same one or not, rather than have everyone speculating.

The bouy system is extremely limited by comparison.

Thanks for the info on the series, will check it out.

Normally you see a red cloud,

Normally you see a red cloud, pehaps some screaming, a lot of scared swimmers/surfers/divers heading to the beach at great knots and then about 10 to 12 hours later a lot of bullshit on internet forums. Hope that helps.

Tagging is one way to find

Tue, 2012-07-17 10:01

Tagging is one way to find out info about whites. It is not done to epees the Greene's its to try and get more info on movement, maybe numbers and speed of movement.

Its really the only info we will ever be able to get as other than visuals what other options do we have. The truth is that we know more about the surface of the Moon and Mars than we know about the bottom of the ocean.

An interesting point id like to make is that ill say the fisheries have no idea what to do, how to handle it or what the hell is going on. I was told yesterday that Shark sightings and shark reports or attacks are not there area, that the water police handle all those inquires and reports. So why was money given to fisheries if they have nothing to do with it? Id say the money being spent on shark research is going on the Christmas party at best.

Research

Tue, 2012-07-17 10:51

While working in the industry, we had a great deal of interaction with Fisheries shark research in the tagging of sandbar whalers [thickskins] up north before they closed the fishery down due to falling numbers. This involved removing the hook, measuring, tagging and injecting them with a dye that show up in its spine like a growth ring on a tree. If you ever catch a sandbar whaler with a tag in it, don't release it, note where you caught it, measure it and remove about 150mm of spine and freeze it. Notify shark research and they will arrange it to be picked up. They take very thin slices of the spine and examine them under a microscope to give an indication of how the seasons have gone and growth rates since its original capture.

Most of their research is for the commercial sector because thats where the bulk of their funding comes from but they still cover a lot of non commercial stuff like new species of wobbiegongs found recently, breeding rates on dusky whalers etc.

Anything involve in accidents etc on the water is the domain of water police with local incidents the usual agency is sea rescue overseen by the local police reporting through to them. If its a serious event an incident controller will be on the scene as soon as possible to head the search etc.

Great Whites

Education is the best prevention.

Plenty of surfers now the risk and plenty continue to surf when Sharks are clearly around. It's called calculated risk, something we all partake in daily living on this planet.

We all know what sharks eat and that sharks attack people like many other animals, hell, this type of dynamic occurs all over the planet and has since the dawn of man.

Read history people and humans are the most savage animal in terms of calcualted genocide and indescriminant death.

So using your ideological intelligence the greatest need for a cull is we humans.

If you cant accept that humans are only part of the environment, and not the top, then best you depart this planet.

Statistically shark attacks are no where near the top for human dealth. I worked with Black Bears in Canada and was well aware death could occur and was a very real probability. I'm in their habitat, I'm no match for them in weight, strength, speed and muscle so I use my intelligence to protect myself as best I could which obviously worked but I am not arrogant to claim I was 100% succesful due to my actions only, luck played a good part considering my very numerous interactions.

We had people deliberately feed bears so they could get a close up photo; in doing so the bear injuries the person and guess what we gota shoot the bear? Better still, remove the problem and shoot the stupid human. Why does the bear have to suffer considering it was coerced.

Life is the study of consequence so if you cant accept the consequences of your actions and have to blame someone else, then again, time to leave this planet.

As his facebook said he died doing what he loved so leave the sharks alone.

We have fish restrictions because people were too greedy to conserve stocks themselves, it's a direct reflection that the government had to intervene. It's a problem that is written on every page in history books yet humans are unable to learn....... We do so to the detriment to the planet!

hi guys only just read this

Wed, 2012-07-18 19:02

hi guys only just read this post and and i must say condolenses to the family. i see there are many diffrent views on the subject of culling or controlling the sharks my view is sharks should not be prosicuted sure there are many more around and they should be taken of the protected list but we shouldnt go out and hunt sharks just because they killed some one. it hits the heart to us all and more so to the immediet familys and friends but this is a the great circle of life when we are in their domain we are fair game and anybody that surfs dive swims in the ocean knows they are there and what they can do simple if you dont want to be eaten dont swim in their waters you wouldnt step into a tigers cage or the jungle with out some sorta protection.if i or my kids were to be eatem by a shark i wouldnt blame the shark and i wouldnt want anybody to hunt it for that purpose. how eva i love catching sharks and i will continue hunting for that reason but my catches of big sharks will always be returned (that is when i finaly get a big one)

Mental health care plan

Sat, 2013-01-05 13:23

Came across this thread and realise it's old but as someone who works in the mental health care industry I felt moved to encourage you Scotto to ensure your friend sees their GP and get a MHCP (Mental health care plan) that gives him access to a Psychologist for therapy at a discounted or bulk bill rate as seeing that would have been incredibly traumatic ands trauma unresolved can lead to PTSD (Post Traumatic Stress Disorder).

On a lesser note I have a shark shield I'm selling, please pm if you are interested as this thread isn't for that-was in two minds about mentioning it here and apolgise if it was offended anyone but if it can save another person from that devestating end then it's worth a mention here.

Go safe
