Anchor rope help?
Submitted by Quobbarockhopper on Thu, 2012-04-19 16:29
was out last week and a decent sized tiger stole the solid pink I had on... decided to have a bit of fun with it and see if I could get my lure back. As the fight went on, the 50lb braid I was using rubbed up against the anchor rope a fair bit and when we pulled it later on, it had done a fair bit of damage to a length of it about 30m down the rope.
An going to get a mate to try and splice it back together for me, but if that fails and Im not happy with the result, will be having to invest in a new rope for it.
What sort of rope should I be after? will 6mm do the job or is 8mm a safer bet? The boat is a 5.8m fibreglass.
Cheers guys, as always!

There is NO WAY I would even consider 6 or 8mm rope for a boat like that.
12-14mm is what I would use.
If you had to anchor in a bit of a blow you want the best on offer. And dont stint in the length either.
A minimum of 3 times the depth of water you are in is required. I would err on the side of safety and use as much as possible.
Plus dont forget the chain.
Safe boating my good man .

This is the stuff you want. Dont go too big, 10mm will be more than enough for your rig.Too heavy a rope and the water drag, specially if the rope floats will make it harder for the anchor to do its job properly . We use 12mm on ours and have anchored in 30 knots plus heaps and never had a problem.

3 strand nylon
I agree with marble , i have been using the same rope , 10mm for my 610 traily and cant fault it, very strong and flexible , i found the silver frays to easy and doesnt float as well , so go the nylon from taylors and most other boaty shops, which is available in 100 or 200 mt coils
