$20 Okuma Graphite Rods - Anaconda

Hi guys,

Did anyone pick one of these up the other day? They went on sale yesterday and were all gone by the time I got there last night.

Luckily I called up the day before and put 2 on hold, one for the missus and the other a spare.

Any reports on them at all? 7' single piece graphite, 8-15lb line weight.

The guy said there would be 40 coming in next week, so maybe call up and get them to hold you one.

There words, $20, Okuma and graphite in the same sentence are enough for me.  But, let me know how they turn out, would be interested to see if you get your money's worth.  Jk's. :)

Can't go wrong for a cheap river backup. You can't get much for $20 these days!

They look alright for the money.

I played with one today and yes they are graphite and seem decent, but when loaded up they look like Tapout's double flex rod.  Could have just been this particular one, where the curve wasn't smooth.  On closer inspection it looked like on this particular rod, the graphite wrap wasn't cut straight and there seem to be an extra bit that was just rolled over with the rest.  Worth going to take a look at the rest when they come in to see if all of them are like that.

Guides look the part, but the chrome finish is suspect.  Put my name down for 2 though.  For $20 it cheap enough for my kids to fish with.

No I don't have them yet, I played with the demo unit.  They had one loaded up with a reel and line for folks to make test pulls.  Like I said, decent rod, just that on this unit the curve wasn't smooth.  There was a clear stiff spot 2/3 up the rod.

I have put 2 on hold for my kids, so that they can stop using the toy rods they have now.  Would be good to let them have a rod with more feel.

It's the $20 special.

Oh and by the away, the entire Saltist range of rods will be on sale before the end of the month.  Are they any good?

I'm with Spess & The Faulkners here. My initial reaction to this thread was wondering how this sites sponsors feel about it. With Oceanside, Tackle shack, Complete Angler etc being supporters here, & being local shops that give genuine discounts to Fishwrecked members, they must be spitting seeing another non site sponsors name mentioned.....

Opening myself to a flaming here.

So let me get the game rules right, from now on, no more mention of other boat manufactures other then Commodore Marine?

Don't get me wrong guys, I support the locals where I can.  If they have the same product I want, I am more then happy to get it fom the locals when they have a sale.

I take it that you folks don't have anything in your tackle boxes that were not bought from anyone other than a sponser and you have not bought off Ebay either.

Yeah look, i was for real

Sat, 2008-08-02 19:23

Yeah look, i was for real when i typed that.... Smile

The way i see it is these guys(Tackle Shack, Oceanside, Compleat Angler etc) PAY Adam for the right to advertise their own business on his site. I know if i was one of them, having payed good advertising coin to have 'exclusive' access to a captive audience(us), i'd be pissed if every Tom Dick and Aunty Ethel came on here (Fiswrecked) espousing how cheap fishing gear is elsewhere- effectively giving the competitor free advertising...

So, i just merely mentioned how bitter it must taste for these 'financial' site supporters to see it going on under their nose- essentially drawing business away from them on the very website that they have payed good money to, to advertise their own business, and offer prospective customers(us) discounts and service above and beyond their normal trading terms.

And to answer your question about shopping elsewhere to save a buck or two- the simple answer in no. Having said that, i am fortunate enough to be in a position to not have to split hairs over saving a few bob. Also, its probably only fair i mention that its no great secret that i'm good mates with one of the proprietors of this sites financial supporters/advertisers, so i guess, i'm probably a little biased. (hence Holths' comment about the brown nose i guess Undecided).

So for mine, if it were me paying good money to advertise my business to a captive demographic, in my field of expertise- i know i'd be 'spitting'. I think if you were in the same position, you would too mate??

Anyhoo- in the immortal words of someone famous- End of Thought, Bugger Off.

Sat, 2008-08-02 20:17

deefa what happens when they advertise in another form?? ie:local paper, fishing magazine etc

should they get annoyed when they turn the page and see someone else is also advertising similiar items???? i think not.... its called "competition".....the site sponsors pay for the exclusive 24/7 advertising on this site.... others dont get that....

as for you being fortunate enough to not have to bother about saving a bob or 2.. good on ya.. i wish i could be like that but im not... unfortunatly.....

as for this...."I think if you were in the same position, you would too mate??"

i have been there deef.... i used to own and run a couple of video stores and i think your inteligent enough to know that i wasnt the only video store advertising to get and keep my customer flow happening.... it makes for good "competition"

as for Bugger Off.... not any time soon mate....

and like i said, i will support the sponsors here when and if i can....

cheers Jes

I use to have a site re PC accessories and had 2 site sponsors which mainly covered my running costs for the web page. Not one sponsor ever gave terms and conditions.

Won an award for being one of the quickest growing sites in OZ..

got out due to smaller profits and too much competition

others have disappeared as well

Sat, 2008-08-02 19:57

I agree with alfred and see were hes coming from and deefa as well. ALL I MEANT was personal preference i dont shop there and the other 2 names like it because id rather shop at my local. Now my local is about 5 shops around me i go too but service about 2 regulary. if they havent got something i want they get it in and if something is cheaper at one of these BIG shops they always match it price wise.

NOW THATS WHY I SHOP LOCAL.

You can promote all the shops you like on FW in my opinion but to who it counts we go to the right ones. Cheers chris.

Sat, 2008-08-02 20:08

They pay Adam for the oppurtunity to capture some of the WA market. Hardly exclusive deefa.

Anyway, its a cheap rod to be used as a backup or for someone entry level, not to create a fkn storm in a teacup. A $20 rod is not going to send the 3 companies bankrupt. I know there are plenty of young kids that enjoy fishing but cant all afford top notch stuff, but don't want a pretty fluro number.

I better buy my berley and pollard from one of the stores, rather than SPESS, otherwise im not supporting them!

Adam and the mods control

Sat, 2008-08-02 20:01

Adam and the mods control how open the site's disussion is, and for the mosty part it it. I don't think the sponsors would be any better served by having discussion limited to products they sell.

Didn't someone say that Commodore picked up distribution for that lockable petrol cap? Surely that isn't a conincidence after it was brought up here? A Commodore rep led a discussion on what features fishers want on their boats.

These are just two examples of crossfertlisation that you probably couldn't get if you restricted the discussion.

Competion

Sat, 2008-08-02 20:45

I know to well about competion with three other aquarium stores plus pet stores in rockingham. I work nearly 7 days a week and when i get a spare day i like to go fishing.
Living in rocko i usally dont have time to travel for a bargin or support site sponsors. Everbodys sircumstances are differnt and you cant knock people for where they buy there fishing gear.
