2 stroke

Hi, about 6 months ago I bought a 5m Quintrex with a 1999 Johnson VRO oil injected 2 stroke, It starts first time , has never let me down so far, have flooded it once, but started ok with fast idle lever up, ran it a week ago from Maylands to Freo and back, have been out in it 5 times so far, including Walpole no probs, I have been told that I should disconnect the oil injection and mix the oil and fuel in the tank, not sure what to do as it is running sweet as?

If it ain't broke don't fix it

If it has an oil injection system and it is working well, why change it out? I understand all too well that you need the right ratio of oil / fuel mix, but if that is happening already then why change the method? If it were me, I wouldn't stray from the factory setup

Yes mate that is what I am thinking, just never had a 2 stroke before, always 4 stroke, it blows smoke on startup, but not when it is warmed up, been told they all do that.

Don't change it

Two bangers all blow smoke. I wouldn't change the oil injection setup if it ain't broken.

First sign of a fuxked oil

First sign of a fuxked oil pump may be a seized motor 17 years old might not be a bad idea if its the original  .

 A while back I had a tinny

Fri, 2017-05-26 20:39

A while back I had a tinny with a 30hp Johnson 2000 model outboard and was told the same, however the oil injection system seemed to work fine so I left it. While on holiday in Walpole the wife and I went out got half way across the Nornalup inlet and a warning light came on and an alarm sounded, the moter went into a limp mode and we had to crawl at about 5 knots all the way back with the motor cutting out. I'm not saying that you should or shouldn't diconnect the oil injection system but if you plan on travelling any distance then you should be prepared for this to happen and have a way to get yourself out of trouble if required. I spoke to a number of people and they mentioned Johnson motors having troubles with oil injection systems especially around the late nineties because thats when the company went bankrupt. I'm not sure what sort of system you have on your boat but a spare red feul tank filled with petrol that could have oil added to it if something was to happen might be worthwhile.

Think I will just leave it as

Think I will just leave it as it is, the motor is very clean, looks like new, the cover and paintwork is great, has 125psi on all 3 cylinders, the oil tank level drops every time I go out, so that is ok, would be a bit hit and miss to mix the right oil to fuel ratio in the 60tl underfloor tank if the VRO was disconnected, I think, so guess I will just keep fingers crossed.

By the way,the same bloke who advised me to have the oil injection diconnected, said it was a bad move to buy the boat with the 60hp Johnson 2 stroke, and in his opnion I would have difficulty selling the boat with that motor, and he was a boat mechanic, but he did agree that the motor ran well.
