2 stroke

question about 2 stroke outboards.  Mine runs ok, just a bit slugish getting up to speed. when the throttle is over half way it gets up the plane quickly but it does not like going slow. does not die or anything just doesnt seem to like it much ????

I have a 115 Yamaha saltwater series and found between slow runs I give it a good run at higher rpm it smothers right out they need a good run to clear, normally give it a good run before going back to the ramp, have found it to start and run better next time out

What brand do you have

Some switch  off cylinders when going slow which may seem sluggish until speed is up eg mercury optmax

I have the same issue here, I've been told it might pay changing propellor sizes or at least talking to someone about it, I run a 115 Johnson Ocean Runner but by the looks of things it seems to be the norm.

Run fuel dry

Mon, 2012-09-17 22:32

Does everyone with a 2 stroke run fuel dry when flushing the motor? Does this do damage to the motor..

I wouldnt suggest it. Carbie

I wouldnt suggest it. Carbie seals etc can dry out depending on model. Also the last couple of fires would be lean as well which could mean insufficent lubrication as well as other issues incountered running lean.

Maybe check the user manual?

(only speaking from 6months small plant mechanic job and an interest in motors, motorsport, etc)

The Manual for my Yamaha

The Manual for my Yamaha Salwater Series II recommends it.  I believe its to stop oil settling in the bowl.

just remember that 2 stroke

Wed, 2012-09-19 13:03

just remember that 2 stroke fuel only last for about 3 months at the most when mixed, and yes i do run my motor dry because shit fuel mix in the crabies is not good, i put fuel stabiliser in my fuel so it stays fresh for 12 monthes, and 2 stroke are meant to rev hi, so the harder u use it the better, never had any issues with my 25hp merc, and i thrash the hell out of it,  just make sure the fuel mix is correct and u should be sweet

.. do you find on the smaller 2 strokes - mine is a 25 Johnson, that they really don't idle well in gear, like when drifting and just putting in gear to move or chage direction? Mine cuts out often in gear, but it will idle all day long, but idles quite rough - maybe it is set too slow in the idle?
