1 kw transducer in a wet box

just wondering if anyone is running a 1kw transducer in a wetbox.

what are the good/bad points?  was it worth doing?  is it better than a 600w transom mount?

what have you filled it with?  give me your best gps cordinates for the big fish?

i dont think i will trick anyone with that last one....... ha ha ha ha

there are numerous opinons from water to gylserine.< (spelling on that is a bit iffy)

or if you would just like to share your opinon.

cheers.

big factor is thickness of the hull and how clean the water is under it ( ie does the hull have any strakes etc that can cause bubbles and effect the picture produced.)

Firstly What boat is it, how long and do you have any pics of the hull from behind ( transom shots) and under the hull.

Easy way to check and find out is to take your existing transducer and out it in a bag ( plastic strong type) and fill with water or mineral veg oil. just seal the bag and place it in the hull on a flat spot best suited for the location of the transducer, this will give you an indication of suitability. ( old trick that many old school installers still use). I found with my Berty 25 the hull is far to thick and kills to much signal and i went for a 1kw transom mounted wet face set -up, but using a big commercial transducer. see my thread in the boating sections.

Speak to Ryan at Ocean Side Tackle, he runs wet box's in his tub.

in some boats they work like a dream and in others they a nightmare....

thanks tony

i did read your other post.

the boat is a southwind sf655 fibreglass. as to the location, i was thinking of the kill tank, which is located just in front of the engine recessed area.

as for the bottom(under the hull), where it will be mounted is flat, no ribs to shoot through. not sure on the thickness of the hull, and would be aprox 1 metre from the very rear of the transom and 300mm from the centre of the keel.

your wet bag theroy sounds good, but does that mean you have to be in the water to do this?

i know the wet face would be better, but i can not bring myself to drill a hole in my hull, it is also a trailered boat which makes issuses with the trailer.

also i do intend to upgrade one day and then i can remove the ducer and just leave the wet box.

have you got the 1kw ducer?

cheers ron

Hey fisho ron,

I have just fit the 1kw wetbox to my 112 lowrance with boardband and I think it was abit of a waste as the wetboxs are around $1500

The boardband is the way to go but if your sounder cant have it then get the 1kw if you head out deep

I can only give you one spot to try if you get the 1kw you will need the 1kw to read the bottom

thanks m/mouse

i was only joking about the gps co-ords.

when you say $1500 did that include the ducer?

i plan to make my own wet box out of the white cuting boards you get and then glass it into the boat with a sealed screw on lid with a filling point on the lid.

there will be no rotting/rusting issuses.

i know the ducer is $$$$$ but the rest i will do myself.

i was manly wanting to know if the 1 kw ducer in a wetbox is better than the 600w transom mount in depths to 200mtrs, any deeper and i would not be fishing the bottom anyway.

does the 1 kw read better in 30-60mtrs or is it overkill and only suitable for deep water?

cheers

Yes $1500 was for the box

Yes $1500 was for the box and the ducer from (all boats)

if you have the money then I would buy one

but for 30-60m I think it would be a overkill I got mine for the 200m+
