Exmouth spearing trip

With the long range forecast looking good, Wednesday morning saw the Merman and I leave town for an overnight adventure to some islands NE of Exmouth. The run out was glassy with tuna schools busting up everywhere and after 1.5 hours we pulled the throttle back and prepared the gear for a spear.

It was going to be a spear trip with maybe some line fishing if we got time but we really just wanted to dive as many spots as possible to load the GPS with reefs for future visits. The GPS now has a lot more blue crosses on it.

We spent the entire day in the water and the Merman was the in form spearo. Biggest trout was 69cm, which I found, he shot then as I was retrieving it out from under the ledge shoved my hand onto a big urchin and got a heap of spines in my mitt. My hand is still swollen.

We ended up with 6 bluebone to 66cm which was a PB for Merman, 2 trout to 69cm, a jack and a few crays. We left heaps of fish and only selectivley shot some for the freezer.

Towards sunset we pulled up into the shallows of an island and knocked the sides off our fish and cracked a coldie to celebrate.
Best view from a cleaning station I've had.

We moved the boat and dropped anchor for the night where the Merman cooked up the most delicious Thai Red Mangrove Jack curry, one of the best meals I've tasted.

The most travelled tupperware in Oz!

Anyway we hit the hay feeling pretty chuffed until 3am when a unforecast 20kt NE wind kicked up (must've had the trainee weather forecaster on that night). The sloppy bouncing meant a pre-dawn shift where a few hours later made the call to head for home while we still had a following sea. 2 hours later and a few wet faces we hit Bundegi to find a big wave surge on the ramp so I dropped Joel off and headed for the marina. That 8nm was pretty testing with 20kts and 1.5m seas on the beam but we got home safe and sound. Add in a million sandfly bites while we skinned the fish at the table to compliment my swollen hand and I'd do it all again tomorrow. The freezer now looks very healthy and the GPS even healthier.

Weekend Report

Bit old, but headed out on the weekened with a mate in a tinny. Windy as hell working the islands, but managed a good feed of skippy, whiting, gardies and a healthy 6.8kg dhuey from around the pots back of Garden Island on a pirate jig

Last Fridays Tuna

I headed out last Friday from ocean reef with a few mates, we were targetting macks but unfortuantly they didnt wanna play ball. We hadnt had the lines in for more than 10mins when we hit the first school. We ended up landing 5 and loosing one on the light gear. Heres a few pics

Macks

Howdy Crew,

Just a quick one, headed down to Jurien last Friday for my bday and get the boat out for a day, weather wasnt the best so didnt do too good. But managed to get a trawl in tho and pick a few nice Mackies.

Here are photos of a couple we got, had a few boys come up from Perth as well, they manage to bag 2 the same day and 5 next morning

Hopefully we can get down there again when the weather is a little better

Cheers!

First night time fail

Went for a bit of a night fish on Friday night, at a regular spot on the Five.

The trip was not off to a good start, when half way to Woodies I realised that the bait was still sitting in the freezer. Thankfully I managed to get some squid at a servo on the way down there, so at least we had something.

Anchored up fairly shallow and started to burley with some pollard, using a plastic on my bream rod, to try and snag some herring for bait. Ended up getting lucky there and pulled up around 16 to 20 herring in about 40 minutes. These all went into the bait esky, and I thought our fortunes had changed for the better.

Once it got dark my mate was running squid, and I was running whole herring. My mate became known as the ray master throughout the night, as he couldnt get away from them, pulling around 4 or 5 to the boat.

My first proper run was an absolute beast. Got some good head shakes so knew it had to be a good shark. As is always the case, it took the lighter of the 2 rigs I had out, but this was still an 8000 Stradic with 50lb braid so i thought I was in with a shot. About 4 minutes in, and with my spool largely depleted, it went slack. I presume that his tail touched my braid and that the 1m of wire and 2m of 80lb mono that I was using for leader might not have been enough.

Switched spools on the Stradic and lobbed another herring out there, and less than 15 minutes passed before the EXACT same thing happened. Was seriously annoyed about this as the same rig I was using on that setup has accounted for many sharks, but there must have just been 1 or 2 big boys out there that kept taking me to school.

Quite late in the night I hooked up to what I could immediately tell was a monster ray. After a solid 90 minute struggle and with me still having a stack of line out in the water and making no progress, I decided I had had enough, so grabbed the spool - pointed the rod at him and pulled. I got lucky, as one of the wire snelled 6/0 gamakatsu that I was running pulled straight before the line gave way (a good testament to Till's Daiwa braid and my PR knots haha).

Every one of the herring I caught ended up getting slammed over the night, some came back chopped in half, others mysteriously disappeared off my hooks after a small 'bzzzzt'. But end result was I caught f*ck all except for one annoying port jackson.

First night trip I have done on my boat without bringing a sized demersal on board. Also the first I have done this year without a shark being landed (PJs dont count!).

No pics, as didnt want to document a failure

Sharks down south

Went down with a mate to see if the salmon were running yet and decided to do some shark fishing the night before. Ended up with my first wobbey and a port jackson. Never caught anything this big before so was stoked. Both put back to fight another day. Wobbey was estimated at 30kg. No salmon to report of the next day. didnt see one school :(

Squid Busso Jetty

A lot of squid have turned up on the Busso jetty the last few days but a bit on the small size. It's all to do with the moon. It might account for the action we've had recently.

Toona on light spin..

Hi fellas,

Well the weather/wind/water up my way has been average of late but we still managed a quick arvo session last week chasing flighty Tuna schools around the ocean.

I nailed this 6kg fella on 4kg Spin and a 20 gram slice always great fun catching Tuna on light gear, also seen a monster Spanyard hit my metal slice but failed to hookup...

Cheers.

Nice Dhuies South of the Cape

Hi all,

Saturday blew out early but not before the guys on board bagged 6 dhuies, 5 cod, a sweep and a couple of swallow tail nannygais.  One of the dhuies went 18 kg.

Oops I did it again!

Hey guys, got out for a quick fish off the Cape again today. Was pretty slow going but managed to jig up a nice Queenie on the Daiwa Pirate then guess what happened. Yep you guessed it, ANOTHER BALDY. This time on a McArthy 8in Bullhead minnow. Not sure what i'm doing right but this run can keep going for as long as it wants. mmm Baldy burgers.

Apologies on the Baldy pic, phone died out on the water. But a crap photo's better than no photo.

Cheers Matt

East Freo River Session

Just went to east fremantle at 11:00am with my 7 yr old son, caught a small flathead first cast and it was on from there.

Caught 5 small pinkies, biggest was around 30cm (caught by dylan my son, almost pulled him in the river on his 3 foot ugly stick), 1 decent 25cm bream (dylan), a large flathead that shook the gangs at the last moment, a flounder and got done by a small sambo on the weed banks. It got the loose gang hooks caught on one of the weed banks and shook itself free while i tried to get the lip grips onto it darn !!!

Was a great time, used whitebait on gangs with a running sinker and swivel. There is usually tailor and skippy around but they werent there today.

Couple more pic of the Great White

Hill river report

With all the gear and esky packed, myself and a few mates headed up to Hill River mid morning on friday.

Two of the guy's were new to beach fishing so i packed a few extra rig's expecting to be showing them how its done.

As soon as we arived i was shocked to see access has been resricted to some areas.

I put Coug's on watch for the ranger as we set up for the night.

With light winds and no weed on the beach it looked very fishy. I helped the new guy's rig up for tailor and started to fish.

A few large herring were caught but the tailor were not around, only 1 was caught.

As darkness set in we hooked the usual handfull of stingrays, usualy i snap them off in the water to avoid handling them,

but we pulled one up for a photo as my new friend had never caught something that big.

Right on the high tide My other friend got a hit and soon had his first bronzie on the sand. Not huge but a good start.

Ididn't catch anything, spent most of my time helping the others but was glad to see some fish landed.

Rest of the night was very quiet so had to settle for a feed of herring in the morning (plenty around ) before we headed home.

Cheers. Grant...

Great White off Two Rocks

Hey Guys

Went fishing off Two Rocks yesterday and had a 5m - 5.5m Great White hang around the boat for about 40mins. It was unreal to see one in real life. There will be a small section on chanel seven news tonight. Got a sensational Video and a heap of photo of it. We just finished having a BBQ on the boat and I jumped in the water and straight out and less than a minute later this shark surfaced. I'm lucky to be here today I think it must have been close when i was in the water. Needless to say have bought a lotto ticket on the way home.

Cheers

Another great day out off Gracetown

Haven't posted the last couple of charters we have done due to lack of time but have done about four since last post, off Gracetwon with similar results to yesterday!  Will post photos if you guys are interested.

Headed out off Gracetown yesterday with a great crew onboard - couple of guys from up Geraldton way and a couple from Sydney.  Caught 10 dhuies -released 4, a whiskery shark, a nice big pinky, a nannygai and 8 cod.  The crew were a great bunch of guys who reckon they will definitely be back!

I LOVE TOMAN (Giant SnakeHead) By BKKGUY

No matter how many times I've fished the toman, I still &  always have the big  urge to fish  the snakehead again & again.....   :(

Priory the trip, I've checked with my regular boatman (as always) regarding the weather & the bite rates. I was informed that there has not been any landing of toman for the past few days.

Hmmm...........inside my minds, I was pondering whether should I go or not ???  I just bought a new lure & a new  color for rapala deep diver. Maybe this will works !!! haha !!!

Anyway, I love challenging fishing. Fishing in the wild is a  test within yourself against the nature and of course , against the toman fish. ;)

I just packed up my tackles & hit the road. Fish first think later. ;)Drove some 350KM to reach the toman spot. Crazy me !!!

Enjoys the exciting vid clip and highlights photo shots.

Pinkies?

With all this warm water around havent heard too much about cockburn sound Pinky action. Has anyone been having any luck or too busy taking advantage of this warm water?

Shaun's Mulloway

Oceanside Staff, Shaun have been chasing mulloway lately. Last Saturday night went out late and managed to hook one very late. Got it close enough for a good look but was lost when it went for its next run. Estimated around 20kg, quite a large fish. Sunday night I decided to join him for a short session. 1 hour into it and he got a run and gently set the hooked. We beefed up our gear this time, running 15 and 24kg spinning gear and 120lb leader. It was a short fight and was quickly gaffed. Smaller fish, estimated at around 9-10kg but a mulloway nonetheless.

Please excuse the poor pic, blame Nokia...

FFB snapper

Went out the other night to the FFB for a bit of a snapper run.

Was windy as a bastard out there, howling from the West, which made things pretty unpleasant.

Got a herring on the first drop, which went straight in the esky as bait.

First big run of the night was on the lightest rod I was fishing that night (always the way) and the length of the 7foot Okuma Precision X gave me a lot of grief running around the boat. Unfortunately called it pretty early for a ray, and it was, a decent sized eagle ray, which (thankfully) basically fell off the hook as we were trying to dehook it. With they were always that easy.

Next up were a couple of toothy little snook/long toms, have caught a few others of these out at the FFB, but these were quite a bit smaller.

After the tussle with the ray decided to put something heavier out for a shark as it was now really dark and the burley slick had been going for a couple of hours. Used a baloon and floated the herring around 40m back from the boat, and wasn't long till it took off. After a bit of a fight (not too much though as was a heavier rod), I saw a nice pinkie come to the surface. Thankfully, when it hit the bait, it pushed it up the shank of the hook on to the trace and just copped the point, so the bait was still in top nick.

Drifted it back again, and soon enough got another good run. Could tell this was a shark early on, but was still good fun in the reasonably shallow water. Ended up being (yet another) of those smallish bronzies. I think that makes 10 or 11 of those things since January, they seem to be in plague proportions!

By then the wind had died off a bit and the girlfriend had had enough (her first night trip) so seemed a good time to head back in, only fished a few hours but had had a good time - so motored back to see if my car had been busted into at Woodies - thankfully I had played the russian roulette of parking there, and got away unharmed *touch wood*.

All fish except for the sacrificial herring, were released.

hillary's marina

hey all,

just learning the trade and was thinking bout having a little fish tonight at the marina. anyone had and luck inside or out?

East Coast Bills

Myself and a mate wrer lucky enough to get on a boat - 37 Riv and fish the NSW Game Fish Interclub Tournament out of Port Stephens. The whole crew including the skipper were all rookies having never caught a billfish of any description so we were all pumped to get into some fish.

Final result Day 1 Tag & Rlease of a Shortbilled Spearfish taken on trolled skirt purple on 8 KG line class est.weight 25- 30 KG

Day 2 Tag  & Release of a Blue Marlin taken on skip bait slimy mackeral on 15 KG lineclass est.weight 150KG

                 Day 3  Cancelled Bad Weather

Day 4 Tag & Release of another Shortbilled Spearfish taken on trolled skirt purple on 8 KG lineclass est weight 25-30 KG

If we had killed either of the Spearfish and weighed them would likely have been a record as the record is  26.5 on 8KG

Although other boats in the fleet of 176 boats caught more fish and some less we were all stoked about catching our first bills and watching them swim away again !

Good luck to all you guys chasing those West Coast Bills over the coming weeks

Beach fishing of Wonnerup/Peppi

I'm thinking about having a crack at Wonnerup or Peppi beach, has anyone got any latest catch reports?

Quobba report and photo's from long w.e

Another long weekend means another fishing trip.

My mates and i went to quobba.

Not the best weather but we still managed to fish all day for the 3 days there.

The first two days were spent spinning slices for macks at various spots but we only managed a few small sharkies and little spaniards.

The first good fish of the trip was the tuna  that was hooked casting a soft plastics on a 3000 reel and 7ft rod darda had no chance of getting it in before the sharks came.

We ended up losing a few fish to some big sharks.

We had a ball using light gear and small poppers, stickbaits, slices and plastics catching little trevs and queenies.

With only southerly blowing the whole trip and no luck on slices visit decided to send out a balloon and with in a minute and 10 metres from the ledge his gardie got nailed resulting in a 17kg spaniard.

Hope ya like the photos.

5 Angry Sails and a Blue Marlin March 7 Costa Rica Report with pics

March 7

Had an awesome day out onthe water today! We had a nice couple from California out, and man were the sailfish and Marlin thick. We started the day off with a really big sailfish, seen below, and another mid sized sailfish. Good start, but we had no idea what was next.
About 10 in the morning, we had a really nice blue Marlin, around 300 pounds, come up behind our right diasy chain teaser. We just made a new daisy chain out of 6 green squids, 1 pink one, and then Islander large jet head pink chaser with a ballyhoo stuffed up inside of it. The Marlin fell completely in love with the Daisy Chain and chased it all the way to the boat. We are running the outriggers a little bit lower as the water has been flat calm, and because of that the daisy chain can't be taken out of the water without lifting up the outrigger. So here I am reeling desperately to get the teaser away from the fish, Marlin biting the tail of the chaser, eating the ballyhoo in the process. As the clip hits the rigger and I quickly grab the rigger and pull it up. The angry Marlin is right next to the boat, about three feet away, as Mike tosses out an islander and hits the marlin in the head with the pitch bait. He's not interested. As he goes down, he must have seen the short teaser on the other side which is another daisy chain, this one pink, with a black islander chaser. He decides that would work for him as well, so he nails it before I can get it out of the way. After taking off half the spool from the teaser reel, and again eating the ballyhoo in the chaser, he lets go for a second as he turns for another hit. I pull and pull and pull and then jerk up the outrigger and he is right there under it again, looking up at it, and me, mad I took away what he wanted! It was an awesome sight, 300 pounds of pure excitment, big fins lit up bright blue and that big eye looking up at you! Again, mike hits him with a naked ballyhoo but he's not interested in that pitchbait either. He aparently only wanted those teasers and so he swims away. On the way out through the back of the spread, he slashes one of the naked ballyhoo's on the long rigger, taking about 10 yards of line and leaving a just the head.
We are a little disappointed at the loss, but like anything else, you have to keep trying if you want to get the big one! We put the lures back out in the water, and about 30 minutes goes by. I am mesmerized, just watching the teasers ducking, bubbling, popping up for some more air, when I see a purple shadow below the right daisy chain again. I scream out to Mike, but notice he already has the long left bait pole in his hand and is giving somebody freespool so they can eat. Then it comes, bam the big Marlin under my teaser pops up his head and slams the teaser. I pull and pull and I'm screaming Mike, get a pitch bait out now!!! I see Mike's brother, our mate in training, running and throwing out the pitchbait, and I scream, "Where's Mike?!?!?"! Looking over at the other side of the boat, I see Mike with a bent pole and he's yelling "Stop, stop!!!". Not wanting to give up the Marlin, I let Jose throw out the pitch bait but the Marlin lit up blue goes for the other side. Seeing the pole that Mike had getting about half way down through the spool, I give Jose one last chance. He throws out the pitchbait on the other side, as I pull the teaser in to the boat, i see the pole he has get bent all the way down and bang, pops back up. No hook up, we stop and then have a sailfish dancing about 400 yards behind the boat. Nice, big sailfish, but we all have got the Marlin fever bad at this point.
I call out to another boat over the radio, Jerry with the Cowboy, to let him know our saga, and he starts harassing me saying I had a spinner dolphin behind the teaser or maybe it was a sailfish. The usual ribbing you get from another captain after seeing a huge blue but not having it bite. By 2 oclock, we had a great day, we had released 5 sailfish, including the double above but were going for a little more to beat Jerry. Jerry, the captain of the Cowboy, had 6 releases to our 5, and I don't like coming in second! So we are trolling along about 100 yards apart, he's harassing me on the radio, letting me know he's up one and then, to my horror, I see his mate run to the back of his boat and throw out the pitch bait! Oh no, I think, he's going to be two up! Sure enough, Jerry works his teaser magic, and soon I see a happy customer, reel in hand, and another dancing sailfish behind the Cowboy! Here it comes I think, as I hear his voice over the radio, "Gringo, 7 to 5, I win!" I'm thinking, "dang, no way", but I remember that it's not over yet. About that time, I saw a big shadow under that right daisy chain teaser. Knowing that the Marlin have been in love with that all day, I start yelling to throw out the pitchbait and I pull that teaser up as fast as I can! Mike throws out the blue / yellow islander ballyhoo combo pitchbait and CRASH!!!?!
We have a huge hookup on the 50 wide, line whirring, I'm pulling up the right outrigger and latching it in as fast as I can. I look down and see the spool half empty! Only 450 yards left I think to myself. Mike's yelling, "Go!!! Go!!!" as I turn the boat hard right, and hit the gas full throttle. I look down and now we are to the backing on the reel, only 200 yards left! I notice on the other side of Jerry's boat, about 600 yards away, there is a huge blue marlin, tailwalking as fast as he can away from my boat. I go down on him full speed, right past Jerry (sweet victory:) ), and finally, the boat gets up to the same speed as the fish, and although we don't gain line, we finally quit losing it! Talk about a rush, this is every angler's dream! Everybody is yelling, Jerry's screaming over the radio, "faster faster, Gringo, go get him!" customer is yelling, "Reel's almost out!" the Cummins is roaring at redline and maybe (probably) a bit more, everybody doing their part to catch up with that fish!!! With about 100 yards to spare, reel smoking hot, we finally start gaining line, customer reeling as fast as he can, making up tons of distance and the fight is on! Mostly the fish wins the next couple of battles, but every once in a while, we get a little back. After a while, I start noticing one by one, the Quepos fleet all headed my way, everyone circling, jealous! :) With one proud angler on the reel out back, and tons of other envious anglers in other boats snapping pictures, waiting for the next jump, we finally get the fish up to the leader and the fish is officially released. Wanting to get it in closer for the picture, Mike goes to bring it up to the side of the boat, but the 13 foot long Blue Marlin was having none of that as he slashed his head left and right, right next to the boat. The line goes limp and we all watch as he slowly goes back down into the deep crystal clear blue water. Officially released, but never surrendering, he goes back down to get ready to fight another day. What a great time, what a day!
