Local Report - 23rd/24th July

Rumours have it that there are large numbers of good sized black bream and flathead in the lower reaches of the Swan, other good catches have come from the Canning Bridge and South Perth Yacht Club foreshore. A few weeks ago there were good runs of prawns after the rains, but have died down recently.

Squid have been thick lately and not far from shore, best catches were reported from the weedbanks off Leighton and out from the Fremantle harbour, some were meant to go close to a kilogram with a few larger ones amongst them. Rockfishing reports have been a little quiet, but there are large numbers of gardies and baitfish from the ASI groyne and nearby rockwalls.

The southwest of Rottnest has been firing in recent weeks for large sized dhufish. Best catches have been before the new moon and on fresh occy and squid baits. Cockburn sound is reportedly heating up for pink snapper catches, maybe another early closure to the sound will stop the farce that happened last year when the bite was so thick that many anglers would return to shore to drop off their catches to avoid bag limits and start again.

The trench has been fishing well for big pinkies and grey banded cod if you know where to look, big bronze whalers have also been amongst them. Northern waters, apparently one popular spot is heating up for large sambo's and yellow tail kings and there are rumours that big tuna are cruising through the area, take a guess where.

If you've had a catch, seen or heard about one, let us know,
Cheers Adam
