Trolling with Braid ?

Hi All,
I know that its not the done thing but why don't you use braid for trolling ? Is it the bite in effect or just that if a fish takes the lure it is not forgiving enough, and if this was the case wouldn't a top shot cure this.
Or is it something totally different.

game fishermen
have been using dacron for donkey's years for troling thats the earlier type of braided line so I think it will be ok, I was using dacron (it's the green and white stuff you only see in 1000m spools these days for big game reels) 30 years ago wreck fishing off the east coast of the uk and still have it on my diawa 400h

mono for trolling!
Trolling gets hi speed strikes and braid's near zero stretch often means hooks/trebles pulling out or opening up and if your fish jumps the mono stretch helps to keep your lure/bait attached.
I've used braid for trolling but dont like for the above reasons and know many people that pop fish or loose fish due to the above reasons....quite common issues actually. If you're going to troll with braid i'd back off the drag a bit and run a wind on leader....that's a proper wind on leader that we use for game fishing with a dacron connector etc.

I troll with braid and use the exact setup Ryan suggests...windon leader... But don't forget to back the drag right off. Braid pings from a fish strike at very low lbs.....

when i have trolled with braid, i run a normal wind-on leader (goodyer/top shot) i think there 15ft long? acts a shock/comfort leader for the strike!
but if trolling for bills/tuna (game) i would only run mono...for the exact reasons as ryan stated
cheers

From what I heard more
From what I heard more suspectable to wind knots and if you cross lines could be a few $$$$ you loose, plus the other disadvantages as the others have said

Yeah, my dad has the 30vsw and it has about 1500m of 80lb braid + backing, nice reels but a bit heavy for bottom fishing.

yeh VSW!
Yeh i troll with 2x Inter 30VSW and 2x Inter 50VSW.......awesome reels that pack a punch and the DURA drag washers has no start up inertia and maintains drag consistency!

Hey' I'm no expert but when
Hey' I'm no expert but when I used to troll with skirts for tuna/bonito on the outside of the Five Fathom Bank (when I was in Perth), I made the mistake of tying the braid right up to the lure. I soon discovered that I lost a lot of hits. Swapped to a decent length (shock) leader of mono and it made a huge difference. Mind you - that's trolling for small stuff. Big stuff is not something I've had experience in.
And yes, have the drag backed right off, just enough to keep your lure in position.
You want the least possible resistance when the fish hits. IMO.
