Near Tragedy at Quoba

Was speaking to an Ambo mate yesterday, told me they had a callout for a bloke who had gone for an unexpected swim at Quobba

Seems the bloke and his mates were fishing off the lower ledges, with waves coming over about knee deep they would stiffen the legs and keep on fishing, untill one that bit bigger came along and in the drink he went.He managed to get out safely but was cut to ribbons from head to toe from the barnacles and oysters.

Bet he doesn't go down onto the bottom ledge again to be an accident waiting to happen. At least the sea rescue didn't get a call to go looking for him or possibly a body

Have seen alot of people

Have seen alot of people fishing these ledges recently. With so many people being swept off over the years i don't see why people don't learn.

"holy sh!t, did you see that?" haha

Only takes a second!

I think the idea of a half good chance to bag a fish sometimes blurs the part of the brain which makes the safety decisions. Like mako said, no fish is worth a life!

Fishing isn't a matter of life or death, it's much more serious than that!!!

Sounds like they need some rock anchors up there so that people can attach themselves with rope like Down South.

I fished quobba ledges a few times many years ago. He was lucky to get back not with standing the injuries. As Matt said, no fish is worth risking your life.

The ledges are quite safe at low/low tide if there is no swell and an offshore breeze but most people forget that with the low/low tide also comes the high/high tides.Sure the spring tide range here is only around 2 metres and while you are busy fishing time flies by and next thing you know 4-5 hours have passed and you're only an hour or so off high tide with out realising it.

Now he will be counting stitches instead of fish and not be drinking due to the antibiotics he will need to take for the slime and shit in his wounds.

I'll be forever grateful for the anchors and ropes at high rock, trouble is you are only there for a while and you want to fish, conditions are sometimes not great and thats when fishos get caught out by taking a chance.

Same but different

There was a guy down chasing abs the other day and had his young kid in the surf zone so he could take a few extra. It is one thing to be a dumb prick and get caught out by a wave it is another to put your youngins in danger for a couple of extra abs.I think fisheries need to put an age limit on ab licences to stop it a bit.Last year one fisheries inspector had to drag a guy from the water after he passed a full bag to his kid and went for another twenty.I couldn't be an inspector ,i think i would lose my cool to easily .
