Stella or Saltiga
Submitted by cen on Fri, 2008-12-05 15:28.
Now i have seen this placed up alot on sites but never with a good solid answer to solve the age old question! Stella or Saltiga. The comments that come back are always 'Stellas better!' or 'Go Daiwa'. I don't want to see that! i want good solid evidence on why the one is better than the other and to specify, i am talking about the heavier models ie Stella 18000 and 20000 or the dogfight and expedition. The reason i ask this is because i am trying to work out which one to buy for jigging and popping. Cheers Cen

Too hard to get one straight
Too hard to get one straight answer as you have found out. Both reels have their advantages and disadvantages. I decided to find out myself and got both...or should I say a few of each. Main thing is find out what you want to use it for and are able to afford one for each purpose. That way you'll get the best out of each of the reels.
I personally have gone Stellas for popping and deep deep water jigging due to it bigger line capacity. Straight out of the box they have much better drag system. Saltigas are lighter and more winching power but lack line capacity for the super heavy stuff. For 80lb braid and less its fine. Extra $50 or so gets your Carbontex drag washers if you want to run heavy drag setting. Carbontex allows higher drag setting without the stickiness.
Hope that helps abit....still not a straight answer I know...

Without going into too much
Without going into too much detail, I think if you're comparing the new Stella SW and the current Saltiga that the Stella is definately the better choice.
Main reason, the Stella has the better drag and the current model is now just as light as the Saltiga.
I've seen die hard saltiga fans take one look at the new stella and fall in love with it.

Thats why I got a new SW as well as the 6500EXP. Soon I might have the older model Stella as well... still like the old one.

IMO
I think you need to try both on a rod.I have 6500 exps but have used the stellas as well i just found the old stella sits a little bit lower down off the reel seat it is a bit harder for me .SSOOOOOO personal to which one but in saying that one of the new stellas will be coming home soon.I do still love the amount of drag i can put on with the 6500exp and the simple fact that it is a tractor(6500EXP) vs a sports car(stella)the tractor has far less parts than the sports car so less to go wrong. If that makes sense .

Cheers guys
Chears heaps for the reply! soo why does alot of people go the exp over the dogfight? i would have thought the higher gear ratio would be better for vertical jigging!

Not really. See we chase
Not really. See we chase bottom fish here with jigs so therefore you want to keep it in the zone but still work the jig. The EXP will have alot more torque to winch than the dogfight. The Exp already winds in nearly 1m a turn so plenty fast enough. Join me on my charter in Jan and I'll have a EXP, Dogfight, Stella 20K for you to try.
