Gravel Patch

Department of Fisheries Southern Bioregions Manager Kevin Donohue said fishing for pink snapper was not allowed in either of the Sounds between 1 October and 31 January each year.
Went for a few squid in the sound yesty evening and noticed about 5 boats on the GP. Now i'm not wanting to create any accusations here, but what would these guys be catching out there besides snapper? Mullas perhaps? What do you do if you "by-catch" some poor snapskis mid spawn? Hmmmmm......one for discussion and perhaps enlightenment (on my part).

Hey guys - they bailed from
Hey guys - they bailed from ramp as I was launching so didn't think too much. Un til I got to coathanger and saw them out there plain as day on anchor prob hapilly berleying up?!?!
Too far away to grab rego. But hey - they could be innocent for all I know. I guess DoF just need to do some on-water surveillance for this sorta stuff. But i was pretty surprised to be honest. Could all be above board but still even bycatch would not be good given the circumstances surely?!?!?!
Don't think signage alone is enough, not that you can miss it @ every ramp in the area.

Ban
I dont think you even allowed to get them as by catch.
Cant fish for them at all in the sound.
Could be targeting mullas or other stuff or they dont know.
I fished for tailor a week ago with a mate in the sound and didnt even remember that the snapper ban was on. Maybe the ban isnt very well advertised. If you dont go to the fishieries website how else do you know.
They should put up signs at the ramps around the sound like the crab ban ones.
Fishing isn't a matter of life or death, it's much more serious than that!!!

I dont see the problem
I dont see the problem unless you see them pulling snapper over the side. Then you would call fisheries or take regos

I caught 3 snapper the other week
while targetting KG's, herring and tailor! Even caught one on a Halco Laser Pro 45 - a new first for me.
Just off the edge of GI chasing some B'n'B fish since I didn't catch any crayfish. I returned them all no worries in 6 - 8m of water.
As Jim said, unless you see them physically pull the snapper in and keep them, they could be fishing for anything.

"Take" or "Catch"
I thought it was illegal to "Take" them but not "Catch"
do the rules actually state your not allowed to "Catch" them? still wrong either way
To all the virgins..............Thanks for nothing!

Yeah, like I said they could
Yeah, like I said they could be innocent for all I know. I believe that even catch and release fishing for them is banned to cover that element of the sport, and protect spawing aggs.
I guess it again highlights the difficulties of managing the issue, loopholes etc necessary. Still a bit more on water DoF presence would be a good thing i'm sure you would all agree?
Glad to hear the few that have been caught on the side release OK, and hey I have had the same thing happen myself so I guess it's just one of those things.
Cheers all

My understanding is your not
My understanding is your not allowed to catch them either.
By this i mean you cant go catch n release during the ban season? But if your trying to catch BnB fish and happen to get a pinky, well thats an accident. Cant ban all fishing int he sound, but can try reduce the fishing for bigger fish, especially in the known breeding areas.
Thats what i thought anyway.
I did hear of stories of the fisheries cruising upto boats who had big lines out and they asked what they were doing, they said shark and mulla fishing, but this was not good enough and they got told to move on.

You would be correct in
You would be correct in assuming they could be after Mulloway or anything else, no real drama as stated before,,theres no ban on fishing in Cockburn Sound.
