HILLARY'S MUGGING!!!

well, after a day with the wife and kids, i thought i might go down to hillary's for a quick squid fish.....

got there to a empty car park.... no wind..sweet.

the water was alive with heaps ( i mean heaps, never seen so much activity there before) of fish around 25-30cm ...dont know what they were, as i wasnt armed to fish :( .

after a hour or so, i finally got a squid... a new pb with the mantle being around 30cm or so.... was fun to catch, as i saw it swimming away from me, dropped a jig down( the new ones i got from the tackleshack), and bang, took it straight away... but at the last second, i dropped it....arrrgg... it was still hanging around, so i dropped the jig back in...but it was reluctant, grabbed the other prerigged rod, dropped in a different colour jig, same brand and size, bang...made sure i got him this time....sweet.

i was hoping more would follow, but alas no....after half a hour, i noticed some dolphins working the fish schools up the other end of the jetty....figuring there would be no more squid, i pulled in the rods, lay them down on the jetty, and watched the dolphins work together rounding up the fish...was pretty cool....

they started getting closer, so i was getting my camera out to take a few picks, when it happened. it happened so fast, i am still shocked today!!!! the dolphins came from my right, chasing the fish, one was on a real mission chasing down one fish in particular.... the fish got air, and so did the dolphin...right over my rod which was lying on the jetty, with about 5 inches of rod hanging over, and 3 inches of line to the squid jig.....next thing i realised was my rod going over the jetty, attached to the dolphin!!!! son of a #$#@!..... about 2 seconds later, the dolphin got air again, about 100m away from me....followed by my rod!!!!! you mother $%%^^#@..... after a few more jumps and splashes, it seemed to relax again, and actually went on  chasing fish again.

so there it is, my tale of being mugged by flipper...

hope you guys have a laugh, as i am now finding the funny side of it......just. if anybody finds a penn 260 slammer, and a silstar crystal tip rod spooled with 6lb fireline.....you know who to call.....

cheers

Wow!

Mon, 2008-09-08 19:06

I was all set to read a story of how you went fishing and got assailed by 6 crack in fested maniacs, the insane brake neck speed ride to hospital, a torrid list of inflictions and further tales of a 'standard mugging'.

Surprised

Then I was thinking of kind words that would have sincerely conveyed my deepest sympathy.

Frown

Luke, what a story - man! What a video that would have made!

LMAO Lindsay! They could have used Paul Hogan as the interogator! Wink

Great story Luke - sell it to the newspapers mate - crazy as Foot in mouth

Luke, that's a classic. Sad but funny

Tue, 2008-09-09 08:39

I hope the water police are on the trail of that dolphin. Did you get a good description.

I have a dolphin tale fropm Hillarys as well. Last summer I was fishing the north wall with unweighted mulies. Being a perfect Sunday arvo the wall was packed.
I was fishing with my Big Baitrunner long cast and just after I threw my unweighted mulie out a pair of dolphins came nosing about. The next second my line was peeling off the reel. Not thinking about the dolphins I clicked the baitrunner over and went to set the hook. The next second a dolphin went leaping into the air, with my line wrapped around its tail. It snapped my light braid instantly, but was obviously freaked out. It proceeded to head out to sea doing spectacular leaps every 10 metres. The crowd on the wall, which was mainly made up of families, was wrapped. All cheering the dolphin and making lots of oohs and aahs. Thank god no-one knew that I caused it. I was expecting a herd of angry kids to come crawling over the rock wall calling me all sorts of names such as Flipper Killer.

Luke, who knows, it may have been the same dolphin.

yikes! He musta been awful close to snag your rod!

One of the last times I was there, a sea lion was eating a large fish(looked a salmon) about 10m away from me while I fished.  At first I worried he might have a go at my bait, but he did much better!  Took him about 15minutes to eat that fish, but it was fun to watch.

sorry you lost your gear!

well, went down today with intentions of going for a snorkel to see if i could find it. thought i best ask the harour manager first, if it was ok, as there were signs saying no swimming. he was most helpful, and has given me permission, under the following conditions.

can only be in the water betweetn 9am and 2.30pm

must have a dive float

must have a current scuba ticket( even though i am snorkleing??)

might not be worth the headaches :(

LOL! Would loved to have seen the harbour master's face when you recounted the event Laughing, why would you need a scuba ticket if you are only free (snorkel) diving?

no ones grabbed the opportunity/permission you were given to do the dive for you Luke, there'd be an absolute shitload of dropped gear down there free for the taking. Hubby pulled a range of top quality knives & gear from Geordie Bay Jetty one year, all were in good nick. Let alone see what fish are lurking about
