LATE ARVO DIVE 28-08-08
Submitted by GOATRUTAR on Fri, 2008-08-29 10:03.
I went for a dive late yesterday afternoon with the Mastiff and Chukka, when we hit the water we were greeted by Free Willy!!
A pair of free willies had swam around the boat while we were getting kitted up.Once in they cruised around us not caring too much!
The ledges were loaded with hooter crays!
This big fella come out for a look and wasn't worried at all!
Lucky for him its not season!
Next ledge was loaded too with alot of jumbo's mixed in with some really good size ones!
More Jumbos
A little black bum having a sticky beak!
One of a couple of harlies cruising around!

Fantastic pics Matt
I have had a look at a number of whale picture galleries and they do look something like humpback whales, but the colouring on the front flukes looks different. Are you able to estimate how large they were?

Minke whales?
From the pictures I have seen on the web they look the closest.
SIZE
Minke whales grow to be about 25-30 feet (7.8-9 m) long, weighing about 6-7.5 tons (5.4-6.8 tonnes).. Females are about 2 feet (0.6 m) longer than males, as with all baleen whales. The largest minke whale was about 35 feet (10.5 m) long weighing 9.5 tons (8.6 tonnes).. Minke whales have a snout that is distinctively triangular, narrow, and pointed (hence its nicknames "sharp-headed finner" and "little piked whale").
SKIN, SHAPE AND FINS
The minke whale's skin is very dark gray above and lighter below, sometimes with pale trapezoidal stripes behind the flippers on the top. Minke whales have a characteristic white band on each flipper (this is absent on the southern minke whales).
Minke whales are stocky, having a layer of blubber several inches thick. They have 50-70 throat grooves, running from the chin to the mid-section. The minke whale has two long flippers (up to 1/8 of the body size), a small dorsal fin, and a series of small ridges along the its back near the flukes (tail).

Goat's whales identified
Matt, I hope you don't mind, but I asked a guy at the WA Museum for an identification of the whales you spotted.
This is his reply.
Dear Colin,
It’s a nice underwater photo of a dwarf minke whale, a probable subspecies of the common minke whale Balaenoptera acutorostrata, though yet to be formally described. The species is probably quite common off this coast, but is best known off the east coast where in the Great Barrier Reef it is the subject of a popular ‘swim with whales’ programme.
The sharp pointed head, prominent dorsal fin, and in particular the white patch on the flipper going up on to the shoulder, are quite diagnostic.
Information on this and other ‘Great Whales’ is given in my recent book ‘Great Whales’, in the Australian Natural History series, published by CSIRO Publishing and (hopefully) available at most good booksellers, including the Museum Bookshop in Perth. Minke whales, including this one, are dec=scribed on pp73-76, and a color picture very similar to this one is reproduced on p 67 as well as on the back cover!

Do jumbos walk?
Hey Matt do you reckon jumbos walk? I had a couple spots that had big jumbos on them and we always left some so they would attract other crays. But one of the guys I took out there went back during the year and cleaned them all out. The last couple of times I checked it out, it was empty. Just wondering if they will come back 28 metres deep
