Ruby Reward 25/7/08 * Re-post *
** I dont know why the pics didn't load up for some members so i'll try again! **
Well i havn't been out in the real deep water since my article in WAFM
(Ruby Rewards) was published. With a half a day to spare I though a
quick dash out (well not so quick actually) to fish the deepwater
contours was on the job card. With only half a day i was up against it
let alone the fish not showing up on my sounder when i was searching.
Persistence paid off and i ended up with a stonka grey-banded cod that
i rate highly on the tooth!
After a bit more driving around i found what looked like potential
Rubys and whalla.........awesome eating fish..........I rate them the
best!
Well the half a day went quick, i ended up with some big yellow eyed
red snapper and a good offshore pink snapper to top off the arvo
session and then the long drive in..........well worth it!

You say a long way out and deep water, what sort of depths are you talking about. Do you use rod or winch if it's that deep?
Looks like the grey band was captured on some sort of jig bait.

Paul, 200-400m and i use my rod & reel (deepsea outfit). All fish were caught on my 13/0 gladiator circle hook with a whole squid/whole yellowtail and a whole scaly mackerel....yes three baits onto one hook. The squid is an attractor for the deepwater visual aspect!
As Pete said, the current WAFM has all the goss, a good read!

Went and got the mag today. Good reading but I dont know by back could take the pain even though the rewards look fantastic. Good to see you putting pen to paper again - keep it up.

How would you compare the flesh of of the Ruby Jobbie, to that of a Goldband Jobbie Ryan- same, same??? (Goldband being one of, if not not favourite chewin fish)

if i had to pick!
Both are very nice mate but i'd put the Ruby as my prefered but splitting hairs decision!

Fishing many area's Jason, they move around heaps. I spoke to a friend who was fishing 15nm away from me getting into fish also.....very wide spread with that current!
Yeh got some rain during that picture Dennis! I'm using 3 droppers, 3 single circles with very long droppers indeed!

When the current is strong
When the current is strong do you still find you get fish? When we have got onto fish out there there has been very little if no current, If the current is running we get zilch even if we are holding bottom. Have never caught a Ruby but I only fish out to about 240m, have you got onto any Hapuka out there? There seems to be alot caught down south more but haven't heard of many metro ones?

Yeh agree, with a big current they wont come out to play and those are the quiet days. Try a bit deeper than your 240m limit, the greeneye sharks are a pain but worth it when it produces. I havn't got Harpuka yet but they sit more on the 400-600m stuff that i dont visit often. I do have plans to look at that depth for a Puka, agree not a common catch but less people fish for them so that has a bearing..........bloody deep but

Over 240m? I might have to update to a reef queen
NAH honestly around 240m is my limit, the only thing I'm not getting is the Ruby's if they are deeper then they are safe from my hooks.

Yes, very deep indeed and when i fish the 40m mark it feels very very shallow indeed.......hehehe

Yeh they're such a great fish and I was getting out there for weeks on end getting into them. The writting itch got me so yeh the feature article unfolded with all the info required to get into em. A very well received article and WAFM said they're rapped in the feed back they've got....way more than normal!
