Share in a Boat?

Not sure which forum section, if any, is the most appropriate for this, we will let the moderators decide =)

My brother has a 4m dingy, its been up north a few times but right now is in pieces to have a few modifications done. We've been out on a few people's boats lately and really enjoyed ourselves, so were thinking of gettiing something a little larger. Larger, boats seem to double in price ever 50cm past 4 or 5m and you don't use them all the time, like you would perhaps a car, so we got to thinking about cost-sharing.

We're looking at around 5 - 5.5m, aluminium, prefer centre console. If you think you're interested in something like that, then drop me a message and we can move the discussion to email between interested parties.

Cya,

IMO

I'd rather have a cheaper boat and own it (bank or not) than getting a new or newish more $$$ boat and have to get a partner!

I agree, it normally turns into tears Cry

Care

Sun, 2008-05-25 14:31

Unless you are best mates that always fish together each weekend, it could end in frustration and tears.
If you split the dates avilable someone will typically get all the good days and the other all the bad ones (weather wise). One will take extra good care of the boat and the other will take less care.
If you want to sell and the other one doesn't you have to sell a half share....so who is going to buy that half share?
Too many pitfalls in shared ownership for my liking. As Ryan said I'd rather own a cheap boat by myself than an expensive one with others.

Cheers

I don't really expect it to

Sun, 2008-05-25 14:45

I don't really expect it to be easy.

I just thought I'd throw the idea out there and see if I get any offers from people interested in the idea in principle, after that the next step would be to see if its possible to get past it just being an idea!

Any input appreciated!

Sun, 2008-05-25 20:09

I did it with a mate that I fished with constantly with anyway.

We shared weekly. It was not like that boat moved from house to house each week more like if it was his week he would pick one of his freinds to come out fishing with me and on my weeks one of my other friends would make the third.

Occassionly he would use the boat one his weekends to take some of his extended family wake boarding when the weather was just as great for fishing but that is the joys of sharing a boat.

All the running costs we split on the basis of how many hours where run up doing each persons time. Nearly 2/3 of the hours where in my time so I paid 2/3 of all the expenses. You can each pay for things thruout the year as they come up and square up the ledger at the end of each year.

The bugger for me came when he split up with his wife and his half now became an asset. I had to pay him out and take on the remainder of the loan.

If your the sort of person that gets upset over the eventual bump, scrape or scratch that is going to occur when the other party is using the boat then its definately not for you. My partner left the boat on the bitumen the first time he used it on his own. He learnt about safety chains the hard way but I still had a boat I had only owned for 2 weeks all gravel rashed on the bottom.

Where would you keep it?

Is it a 3 way split in regards to time? - you, your brother and the third party?

Do you have RST yet?

Do you have something to tow with?

Many items to consider

A lot spend time alone in shed

Mon, 2008-05-26 01:43

Be careful about partnerships they end freinships, better off with a boat in the shed that you own or the bank owns but its yours and there to use when you want to use it.

Once bitten twice shy, but your choice!!

Actually that is one of the attractions of a larger boat, the tow vehicle has just landed, so its probably about a month off. My brother's business is buying a tow vehicle to three ton, so it will handle a 5m ali boat no sweat!

RST, thats next on my list after I knock off my MR license!

Haven't gone into partnership with anyone but I'd be quite upset if it was a really nice day and it was his/her turn to have the boat, and then you find out that they all went to Adventure World or something like that instead. I'd have to kill somebody...Yell

Onya for considering mate, but I'd advise against it for the reasons stated by the rest of the guys. Share it with your bank instead. Laughing

Well, I've had a lot more cautionary tales and warnings than interest, so I can probably work out where that is heading. Looks like I better get that dingy finished instead!
