Dramas

Took the boat out finally after a couple of months of crap weather.
Corza and I left Mindarie at about 7:45 and went to the Gemini looked around but could not find
any Sambo's, somthing did come and have a look at my unweighted scaily though but didn't take it :-(

The water was dead flat so we decided to head out wide Saw the water boil with bait fish a couple of times but casting into them come up fruitless.
Within 300mtrs of on of my spots the GPS/sounder turned off and the 27meg was flashing on and off even though it was turned off then everything turned off except for the motor luckily.
After a quick check I found a blown fuse and the GPS/sounder was alive again but as soon as I reved the motor it turned off again.
This time nothing I did would get the GPS/sounder to turn back on I have a battery tester in the toolkit and checked the cradle of the sounder and there was power there.
We ended up tring to have a fish around the Cray pots but had no luck.
Eventually the wind picked up and we headed in only to find that we were heading towards Two Rocks
as I noticed the old Neptune Statue from Atlantis. so back south along the coast we went.

The sounder is now back at the boat shop and hopfully will get fix under warranty.

Thanks Corza for comming out and sorry about the F@#cking electrical issues.

Compass

Wed, 2008-02-06 17:45

this is a typical case of how we forget how to navigate with a compass and chart and rely on our electronics too much, but glad you got home safely.

You must be pretty frustrated. Hopefully the bad luck will turn into good luck next time and you will get a great catch.

Sh@t happens sometimes and at least the ignition was still working. We'll just have to give it another try another day. If I'm in Perth next time your looking for deckies, Sorry guys, I CALL SHOTGUN!!!!. But thanks for the northern beaches tour anyway...

Only luck I've had is being bumped off the plane to work this morning. Now extra day off but have to drive to the airport at 4 am two days in a row.
Lindsey I'll prob head out for a quick dive again next Fri but you will probably be at work..

Analogue Backup

Thu, 2008-02-07 13:23

I know when I had my boat spec'ed I insisted on an analog compass - 'why' they said 'you have it on your GPS' and proceeded to look at me incredulously. 'Because' I said 'you never know when the GPS can fail or loose power to the bridge'.

Charts - well, fortunately, down here I only need one. I have that laminated and on board. But, to be fare and honest - never had a load when I was back in Perth and would be suprised if most would.

Modern technology is fantastic and a lot less cumbersome, but only when they work.

I would NEVER be without an analog compass though.

Lyndsay  - I wish you a speedy and simple resultion matey! Wink Laughing

true true but,

Thu, 2008-02-07 14:03

Even though I've only got a small boat, Ive got charts because when I bought it, it had an old sounder only plus an old gps and obviously I needed charts to search for ground/depths. Now ive bought a sounder/plotter, I have also removed my compass from my dash BUT, I also have onboard my other magellen gps I use for travelling the country side cause I can download the tracks and gps spots to my computer program for safe referral.
Even when I bought the boat I always took out both gps's so I know my co-ords if something goes wrong, so another gps is great (if you do alot of remote 4wd like me anyway) plus my gps spots are written in a book and I've been taught to read charts properly throughout my boating career.

So I really knew the benefits of having a second gps yesturday, but ya cant take your own gps on someone else's boat, chances are with most fisherman they guard there spots more than there missus so your gps might come back but you won't.

thats some peoples opinion but not mine!!!!

From now on Corza your handheld GPS is allways welcome.
I might even go get one for myself.
Oh and a compass.
I do have the maps but they are hanging on the wall in the study, I might just have to get them down.

No shot

Thu, 2008-02-07 14:27

Please understand guys (just in case you think I am) I'm not having a shot or trying to be smart - just that it shows the value of backup, and reading your very unfortunate event, it made me realise how easy it is to happen.

Bit of a wake up call for everyone never hurts - which is why it's not only great that we share these unfortunate events - but also appreciated by folks that we post them. Laughing

yep yep.when i use to own a 14 ft dingy we would often end up out of sight fof land .with no gps a compass was a must.sometimes after driting around fishing i would look up and ask my deckie which way he thought land was .quite often we would litrerly point 180 degrees the wrong way .once the compass was pulled out then joke and laugh to ourselves on what if we didnt have the compass we would we stuffed .
now ive got a bigger boat with gps and all the fruit ,i still always take a analogue compass reading when leaving the ramp .i quite often check my gps when traveling to a spot then find my self stareing at the compass bearing when traveling there.they are a must and i think it should be a manditory safty item when 5miles and further out ,just like a radio and epirb etc
always in it just the depth that varies

Even less than 5 Mitch

I remember once, a long long time ago (no, not in a galaxy far far away :) ) my twin brother and I were out from Jurien - not even 5 miles and a thick sea mist/fog came in - we couldn't see more than about 2.5 meters - was VERY glad I had a compass then.

Maybe OK

Fri, 2008-02-08 19:45

looks like it may not be a Rectifier/Regulator issue.
I put a multimeter on the battery and found that it was pushing 13.8 volts at 4000rpm which is normal.
I did remove the aux charging cable to the second battery
as that was the one that kept blowing the fuse so maybe it is damaged.

Just got to get the Radio and GPS/Sounder back now and im back on the water.
Oh and put the maps and install my anologue compass :-)

As said by dreamweaver

Fri, 2008-02-08 19:48

a few years ago before I had a gps I and a mate went diving just to the murray reefs out from safety bay unaware we had gone through the reef due to a thick sea fog when we came up I was sure we where on the east side of the reef but we could see it breaking in front of us had it not been for the compass we would have headed for south africa trying to get back to saftey bay, in the end I trusted the compass and all was well.......I think it should be mandatory equipment for any boat going to sea.

Would someone like to elaborate on the sun/analoge watch method. Would be very interesting to know. We were out at the Abrolos last week and everyone was trying to decide which way west was. Some very interesting directions were pointed out.

Cheers Mike

Hi Ya,Also note that the

Sun, 2008-02-17 21:45

Hi Ya,

Also note that the instructions on the web page posted by NoWories are for the northern hemisphere so the results are 180 degrees different to the southern hemisphere.

Down Under, the method is the similar but with a couple of very important differences.

Difference 1 - point the 12 at the sun, not the hour hand.

Difference 2 - Half way between the 12 and the hour hand, using the narrowest angle, points north, NOT south.

Pretty important to get that right or you could end up anywhere      :-)))

At night time, you can find south by the following method - provided you can see the stars and know which stars I'm talking about.

Observe the two bright pointer stars near the Southern Cross. Imagine a line (the first line) running in a direction towards the Southern Cross extending at right angles from the midpoint between the pointers.  Imagine another line through the top and bottom stars of the Southern Cross, running towards the first line. Where these two imaginary lines intersect is south.

Cheers.
