Whiting fillets

Whiting fillets

1.7 kg of boneless whiting fillets. Takes a bit of work but it's well worth it.

Have you tried a scaling bag? I've had good results with them but never as many as you've got there!

Nah mate I've never tried it. I've got one but never used it. I guess I should give it a crack and see how it goes.

scaler bag for the win

Mon, 2020-04-20 15:12

 scaler bags are the best!

no, they do not damage the fish, unless you drag them around for too long. usually, just a few minutes is perfect.

they work awesome on squid and mussels too, but I always use 2 bags, as I've had one fail before.

Cheers scotto. Roughly how many would you do at a time? Not too many I would imagine otherwise it wouldn't work as effectively correct

scaling bag is a must. I generally drag 30 fish at a time as it can get quite heavy and im always thinking how quick I could dive over to recover if the connections where to fail. Never happened as yet but im going to get a new one as the inner bag has a few holes in it now and the metal sleeves are well rusted. Generally tow at about 7- 9 knots for 5 minutes. I always put the whiting on a ice slurry overnight and cut the next day with a coffee while listening to the radio. I enjoy cutting them and have cut alot in the past few weeks. Having 5 in the house we eat about 60 fillets a week.  Half of the cut goes to my parents or friends. Any fish over 28cm is a big Sand Whiting however I like the medium ones in bread crumbs with a entree of salt and pepper calamari. Gods tucker.

I've heard some sob stories about losing the contents of the bag so just make sure your bag is in good condition and secured properly.

Awesome looking feed, I always drag mine behind the boat in shallow water, if the bag does break I can just go back and dive over for it.

With scaler bag

Tue, 2020-04-21 10:43

Make sure you use the ones that have double bag . So you have the main bag with bigger holes ( mines green) with rope connected but also the finer mesh bag ( orange) that you can remove from it and tie top up on itself. Finer bag stops them falling out , makes it easier to put fish in and out of bag. I do same as davmore with speed and time . Quick check to make sure all scaled . No damage to fish . You know your doing right speed when the bag bobs around spinning in wake rather than dragging it through water.

Thanks guys good advice. Dug the bag out yesterday and it is one of the double ones so will give it a go next time.
