Young fella with a 9/0 hook in his foot after grabbing a big tailor as the swell was rushing back. I bet it hurt like hell, I had to take him to kalbarri ER to get it removed. At least we still got the fish. LOL

He had to go to Kalbarri ER
They had to call the Doc in at 2am to get it out. When they cut the point off it flew half across the surgery. At least he got to keep it as a momento though!

Looks more like a big suicide/octopus hook,around the 10/0-12/0 size.
Big pair of pliers,a quick flick to get the point through ,cut the tip off below the barb and twist it out.No need to go to hospital.

I have seen a few with tears over much smaller hooks. Pushing that sucker through wont be fun for anyone involved, and cutting the barb off often causes a shriek as the energy released when the barb separates irritates the already irritated nerves.
Needs a good shot of Lignocaine, quick push and trim the tip and she will slip out with ease, and no pain.
Just glad I am not yet on the receiving side.
I will try to remember to post up a simple way of getting hooks out that are a little less deeper than this one, and it does not need anything and is pain free (well almost).

That's nasty, not a lot of meat there either, agree it's a octopus hook, loads of ice, a couple of stiff scotches and push it through!! Although alot easier said than done. I copped the front treble of a lure underneath my thumb nail and the rear attached to a angry queenfish at the Mackerel Islands,made the queenie sit still very quickly!!, and cut the treble with a pair of cutters, tried to get it out to no avail. A quick trip to the Wapet camp on the island and sorted within 20 minutes.

One of my deckies got a heavy duty 14/0 tarpon style hook in his left hand about half way between the forefinger and thumb.The hook followed the bone down his finger untill just the eye and a little bit of shank were visible.His finger bent to follow the curve of the hook.
We had not long finished setting the gear north of the Abrollos islands and asked him what he wanted us to do.Steam in[6 hours run and 6 hours back out after his treatment] or wait untill we'd finished pulling the gear the next day and then head in as we had already planned.He asked for a couple of Panadiene forte from the medicine cabinet and a few beers and he'll survive the 18 hour wait.
Lobbed in Gero around two in the afternoon and a wait of an hour till he got operated on.6 stitches from a cut near where the barb was situated to get access to cut the point off.He reckons it was a laugh for them trying to cut it off with bolt cutters.He was as good as new when we sailed two days later.
My first one was when I was eight, down the mouth of the Donnelly river,got an 8/0 through a little finger.Pliers wouldn't cut it so they had to hold it with the pliers and file through the shank.Lots of blood and tears and plenty of comments from the old man and uncle as they did it.

they never look or feel good , just ask my deckie about his bad days, best advice is while the body is still in shock twist the hook around and expose the barb and cut it off and reverse the hook shaft out, sit around for awhile discuussing options and the body starts to feel the pain and you agonise over how to remove it, its to late then

It was a funny moment when it happened though!
We were all woried about the fish and not the hook in his foot until we seen it when he came out of the surf holding the trace in 1 hand and the fish in the other and him yelling and screaming that 1 of the hooks was in his foot. We had just ran out booze as well so we tried to push it through but the skin was too stretchy and my pliers wouldnt cut through the hook anyway. I still laugh now when I see this photo pop up on my slide show on my computer.

bahahaha at least i am not the only one, my cousin casted out from the boat on thursday and hooked me in the back of the head, then proceeded to yank the rod thinking it was stuck .........and it was IN THE BACK OF MY SCALP ALONG WITH THE PRAWN....looks painful tho

Oooooch not good !! Reminds me when I was about 12 fishing a small river in England for pike, I cast in and thought i had snagged the bush behind me only to hear my friend squeal loudly,
I had hooked my lure right in his cheek, two out of the three hooks in deep !!! we had to walk through the town centre with the lure hanging from his face to the hospital ( Getting some funny looks) where I left him and went back fishing !!!
He was back down after about an hour all patched up.
Lifes a game but fishing is serious !!!

mmm, pushing a hook through, i've done it but not nearly as far as that and that was bad enough, treble too! my crew where gutless and couldn't render assistance so i grabbed the pliers and went for it, first fish of the day too. I'm not so gun ho getting to a fish now
