tagged dhu

caught this little dhu friday, followed up the tag info and it lead to a tagged fish from 13th june.

no growth from tag date (515mm), found in the same depth and released well on release weight to make double sure.

turns out it was 1 of 27 dhu fish tagged that day

was a fare amount of growth on the tag and took a bit to clean so made the tag wound a little worse for ware

pic of fish turned out terrible so no pic of whole fish

Wound at site of tag

Sat, 2015-09-19 22:27

I'm surprised by the condition of the wound at the tag site. It looks a bit nasty for some reason, glads to hear that the fish released well.

The stuff to the left of tag

Sat, 2015-09-19 22:43

The stuff to the left of tag is part of the growth from the tag itself. The excess blood is from me cleaning tag attempting to. The dark area is my shadow. This was a very healthy fish.

Just remember how close I would have got to be able to take the pic of numbers on tag.

Looks worse then it was.

That wound looks horrible, not a big fan of people who actively fish for the tagging of dhuie's, they dont release well and once you have caught your limit - move on to another style of fishing for the day. This is just my opinion, nothing scientific.

how else can you research

Mon, 2015-09-21 07:18

how else can you research these fish no run no fun ?

I'm sure the people who tag these fish are quiet skilled and make sure the fish are quiet healthy when released,

this is one survived and many others have also.

Hi Gyprock,

As I said this is just my opinion, I'm not a fan of tagging Dhufish, plain and simple.

I agree mate, I've been bagged out on here before for catching and releasing a few dhuies for fun. You get someone who tags 27  on a day and that's ok apparently

I see your point seakem, so

Mon, 2015-09-21 10:13

I see your point seakem, so rather than just bagging people out for doing something they believe in, but I necessarily don't, I thought I would send an email off to fisheries to ask how I can access information regarding how many fish Dhufish have been tagged ( Mandurah to Two rocks area approx. ? ), and also asked them to explain their view/statistics on barotrauma and associated risks, and keeping these risks in mind, what would be the mortality rate from a scientific/educated view.

Quite simply, I would like to know the relative number of fish that die from tagging.

I dont believe in bagging people out for doing a cause they believe in, so it's time to get educated and reassess my views. If the mortality rate is acceptable by fisheries, verse the wealth of information that is provided, then maybe this will change my opinion.

Just did Dodgy, Andy mac's comments seem quite good, tips we can all learn from for releasing dhuie's. I guess these guys are very good at what they do ( tagging )
