SALMON AND TUNA - VIA DAVE'S THUMB DRIVE!

SALMON AND TUNA - VIA DAVE'S THUMB DRIVE!

Dave and I hit King George Sound yesterday in Dave's trsuty 14 footer with the aim of trolling for Salmon. Conditions were good, with a mirror sea and little swell. At least inshore.

Departing the boat ramp at a very gentlemenly 07:50am, we headed to the west side of the sound, dropping out a couple of Rapalla HBs and me adding to it with with a skirt hung out wide off a 4-8kg outfit.

Despite the conditions, it was s till a bumpy ride and as Dave moved the boat ungracefully into second gear (first gear being motor off and second gear being full WOT!).

After 30 minutes of reseating my cap 12 times and trying not to let my brought cushion disappear up an unretractable place within my hammered back side, Dave finally backed off and we payed out HBs astern with Dave's off a 4500B and mine a 6500B. With both bait runners set, we trolled up the west wall of KG sound and Dave's gear soon sung with mine soon to follow. In short time Dave had a nice Sambo onboard. Unfortunately, all I could manage was a bust off - Damn! Say goodbye to a Rapala X-Rap 20 footer!

More trolling with me replacing the X-Rap with a Red/White Halco RMG. Dave's 4500 was soon  singing again with atypical repeated and consistant bursts. This had us fooled until he had it alongside. The Bluefin had been hooked in the tail! No wonder it had plenty of oomph for more runs! Dave's first Tuna and I didn't have to deploy the gaff - much to Dave and I's mutual relief! (Per a previous story).

The RMG was seeing no action, so I dropped on another one of Dave's HBs (what were they Dave?) and we were both soon in action. Thanks Dave BTW!

Two more plus 5kg Salmon onboard.

A bit of bottom bouncing inbetween scored a nice KG for me and a world record 5cm LJ for Dave. Go Dave the brute killer!

We finised off the day with another troll which resulted in Dave scoring another nice Blue, this time caught more conventionally with the fish facing forwards!

Then the fun began!

Here's a deadly equation:

1 VERY unhappy thumping and lively Tuna + Landing Net (with patented SUPA TANGLE mesh) + 1 large HB complete with 2 sets of sharp triples.

ADD two humans + 1 rolling sea (and boat to suit) and (this is important) - One Tuumb!

Shake all incredients with great uncoordination, unably assisted by said fish and net.

Result - ONE DEEPLY IMPALED THUMB!

Vioala! Thumb Drive!

Outcome - One VERY painfull thumb NOT assisted by fish - also attached!

Desert - me watching Dave pull the hook out against the barb - impressive pain management!

We finsihed the day with Dave promising to vist the hospital and bunngs - the former for a Tetanus shot and the latter for a good set of plyers! :)

Thanks Dave! A great day out with you as usual! Look forward to the next time mate!

How's the thumb?

Good report Dreamy...

...and I must say the pantry shot is very original. A refreshing change from the wheelie bin/colourbond fence/brick wall backgrounds we usually see on here!

Sounds like a fun day, apart from the dramas with the thumb...Dave might have to lay off the hitchhiking for a while?

I seem to remember sporting a rather nasty eel bite the last time we fished together Colin. Private health insurance is certainly necessary when you are around Tongue out

Thanks Dave - excellent lures those! Will be picking up a couple during the week.

Yes, as Dave mentioned - I was a bit green under the gills - might have had something to do with a few beers on Friday night :). I'm still impressed you could withstand the pain of pulling that 6/0 hook out barb backwards! YEEEOW!!!

Yup, looking forward to the next excursion Dave!

I Know the Pain davey

Sun, 2010-03-14 15:47

I buried a small bait hook in my finger last year. Cut it off and decided to leave it like a real dickhead. Once the festering set in and the throbbing became so intense, I decided to act... By cutting with a scouple I couldn't find the barb so it was off to the quack for some local and some fishing of a different kind...Yell. Following that..A lone trip to the S-Bends resulted in me spearing my arm on the point of my filleting knife. A torneque and some bandaids kept me fishing for a day and then it was off to Dennison for some medical attention. LOL. The things we do......
