Facing north (the camera). Behind the missus, (the photographer), Monkey Mia is about 2 - 3 mile away and we're in about 7 - 9 metres of water.

We caught 180+ fish and kept 40 odd (over three weeks). All within 8nm of Monkey Mia. Most of the snapper where within 3 mile, but we were there right before, and as the season closed, so the big ones had started to come together to spawn. I think we caught 72 pinkies and kept 6.

Mate sounds like you had a great trip, We fished pretty much within 5 miles of Monkey Mia, we had

one spot that was really consistent for Black snapper, Bluebone, rankin and estuary cod. I found

that Monkey Mia fished better then the Denham side, still struggling to find good ground in close to Denham.

Kids and missus had a ball so we have re-booked holidays for September, hopeing the winds won't be too strong.

I have never really fished

Tue, 2013-06-04 19:45

I have never really fished the Denham side with any success. I am told September / October is more about mulloway over on the monkey mia side, but I have not been there at that time of the year.

Max size there is 700mm. and the fisheries guys are (thankfully) doing a good job, so he was always going back if he was too big. We have noticed a really good improvement in the average size of the pinks over the last 6 - 7 years. it is being really well managed. we got checked three days running.

That would have tasted great

Tue, 2013-06-04 20:00

That would have tasted great but they have put a size limit on Shark Bay snapper to protect breeding stock.

Limit is no smaller then 50cm and no bigger then 70cm. Fisheries are always out and about up there, they reckon if

you put fish on ice they shrink a litlle, dont know about 2cm though.

Yeah I got a blue bone there

Tue, 2013-06-04 20:03

Yeah I got a blue bone there one year that was about 40.5 cm. put it in ice slurry. got checked at the beach and the fisheries guy double and triple checked... and then gave me the benefit of the doubt. had definitely shrunk!

Hey Randall, gotta agree

Tue, 2013-06-04 20:03

Hey Randall, gotta agree about the fisheries doing a good job, mate of mine at work was telling

me that they use to go up to Nanga and take 100's of snapper, he reckoned that at the time the

limit was only 41cm. Times have changed for the better I reckon.

Definitely. six years ago we were catching snapper by the dozens that were only 6 inches long. now we are throwing back fish between 45 and 50 cm. it is definitely on the improve! and now you are able to keep 2 per day, up from 1 per day that it has been.
