weight

Tue, 2010-03-02 23:44

most of the aging is estimated by weight.. a marron between 60g and 100 grams is likely 12months old and between 100 and 300grams, 2-3 years old.. but this is farmed, where water conditions are controlled. and unfortunatley farmed marron don't get any bigger, because once size its off to market this little marron goes..

Bloody nice sized marron though, i would be guessing prolly 10 years old, assuming the first 5years is classed as mature age, i would imagine it would take the oldguy another 4 or 5 to double in size (tripple in weight) I could be way off lol

Airing on the side of caution, the tombstone should read 1/1/2000 - 2/3/2010 father to 5 thousand, dinner to 1 family  R.I.P.

Was he as tasty as the smaller marron?

cheers we actualy caught 3 more on the snare thats how i catch all mine from rivers to dams some ranging 135 to 140 but we let most of them go to big to keep em all and this feller i kept and taxidermyed it on to a plaque so i can keep it for years. Got a mate to trim me up a bit of jarah board to go on' looking good!!! how ever the age off it i was guessing 10 to 13 just a stab

Taxiderm?

Nice marron mate, How did you go about taxiderming it? I usually get a few around this size each season but I want to mount one to a board, seems a waste just to eat them. Do you inject formaldahyde into the joints and pin it to a board/ a bit of feedback would be appriciated. Cheers

i use to use

Sun, 2010-03-07 07:23

i use to use fomalin/fomalahyde but its hard to get hold of and nasty stuff to use.so i take apart evey seprate joint and cure it in 25% denture alchole the rest water and borax for a period of 2 weeks pouring in more borax as i go. But if you can get formalin use that quicker but also read a msds sheet cause i hear it causes cancer. As for aplying a gloss i used a marine bassed gloss in a presure pack can. You can also get this in a matt gloss and to seal it applyed 6-10 coats on top and underneith the marron hope this helps you
