know the feeling, come on September, bugger having commitments, pain being a adult, much rather go fishing, looked on seebreeze yesterday and did I read it right, the waves in Albany 5 metres, is that off shore I presume Colin 2?

Basically, the short answer is yes, as far as the waves go, but locally, there's a bit more to it.
Firstly, I've found that it depends on from which direction the swell is coming from, usually a 3m swell coming from the SE is worse than 5m swell coming from the SW.
Then, of course, as always, you have to either factor in what depth of ground you fish in. Obviously, if there is a decent swell and you intend to fish close to reefs or otherwise shallower ground, then you have a problem.
Lastly, you have to take into account the swell size and direction if you are fishing spots close to headlands or the perimter of an isalnd etc.
Even with a moderate swell, if it's from the wrong direction for that spot, you experience considerable backwash. This causes what I call the 'bounce effect' and, even with the use of a sea anchor, it can make for a lot of bumps against the gunnels and a lot of impromptu 'deck dancing'

for that, I agree we call rock and rollin', hubbie hates north winds in Leeman, plus when we come in at Leeman, might be ok 10 miles out but come in shallow the waves sit up and a bit hairy few reefs around & low tide, the old saying watch your back.
