Shakespeare 2200 080 - Great old reels
There are still a few kicking around. Unbreakable.
I have heaps of gear, way to much it you ask the wife, but lately I am loving a couple of old school Diawa GS reels that I picked up. They have become my reels of choice when land base fishing. I have the GS4, GS6.
Also picked up a couple of old school Daiwa Silver series reels (4000c and 7000c).
Oldies but goodies. I remember back in the the day if you had one of these you were doing OK.

Sold on that reel aswell. So smooth and light and compared with a Stella off similar size the prices makes it better. Unfortunately on its first mission down south after returning from Karratha it wasnt properly secured in the rod holder, and together with a samurai rod plunged into the Dawesville cut.
I replaced it with a Sustain but wonder why I did that.
When I spoke to Chris at Tuckey's tackle he told me that he heard a bloke scored a brand new Stradic CI4 4000 on a good rod fishing from the cut. Bastard probably got mine!!!

Saltiga z4500 maverick s extreme
Both myself and a mate Sean bought one years ago.
they have accounted for more good Dhuies than any other reel either of us own.
they came factory with a good Ali handle and jigging knob on the handle.
Not the biggest drag pressure in the world by today's standards (10kg max)
but definately a well constructed reel

sol
I have a few saltigas and love them but thats what you expect for the $$$ = quality. on the cheaper end I have a sol 4000 & 3000 that have been an exceptional reels. Punch above their weight and seem to have no line twist compared to some other spin reels, light weight and fun to use with silky drag

Another for the 2200 - 080
And I still have three and they work as good as new and, in their time, had and still have a super smooth drag - for the money at the time simply exceptional

Mine would be an old,
Mine would be an old, Swedish-made Abu 7000. Most versatile and robust reel I've owned. Used it for livebaiting barra, trolling for Macks, bottom bashing for Dhufish, etc, etc. Hasn't seen a lot of maintenance other than a bit of a wash with fresh water after each trip and the odd spray with WD40 and it's still going strong. Wish they still made them like that...

cocroachs, rats and penn 750,s
I give one vote for the old girl ( the reel ,not the missus!) , my 33 year old 750ss bought new in 1980, from the old crackel for tackle near the midland town hall,
it never was the smoothest , lightest or the fanciest but its still going today, like a fine wine.
Its been dropped , soaked , covered in crap, and prob done a million kms by air, boat and 4x4.
Its had 1 new bail spring and 2 sets of drag washers after a few fights with unstoppables down south and up north.
Its got all the square and sharp lines worn down smooth now, and If I was on a desert island with 1 reel , that would be it.
Of course I have alot more modern reels that get used , but the old warhorse still sits under the stairs , ready for battle again.

I would saymy saltiga 3500
I would saymy saltiga 3500 game great reel has bowled over quite a few fish from both land and boat and match it to different rod lengths, thats probably my oldest reel put a nice ali ball handle on it and bought a spare spool as a back up as im always selling off or giving away the older gear a few mates have had a go with it and are amazed at what it can handle

Favourite
I have two favourites. A mate put me onto Accurate reels about 6 months ago. My best overhead is my Accurate Boss Extreme 600 on a Terez. For a small reel it can hold crap loaps of line. They are great for casting, trolling and pulling fish off the bottom. My best spin would be my Twinpower on a Jigwrex.

have to be either my Calcutta
have to be either my Calcutta 400 or my Twinpower 4000 SWPG. little reels that have stopped some big fish for me in the past, the calcutta i have owned for about 10 years and i saved for about 4 months to afford that with a G-Loomis GL2 baitcast rod, as with the others, it's scratched up, no longer smooth but she has handled herself with aplomb and still gets a guernsey every now and then.

Daiwa millionaire baitcaster. Loved that reel, despite massive birds nests trying to master casting it. Gone to a better place many years ago.

Ocea Jigger 1500NR for me
Ocea Jigger 1500NR for me
When asked by a non-fisherman 'how many fishing rods do you really need?' the correct answer is either:
n+1 (where n is the number of fishing rods you currently own); or
n-1 (where n is the number of fishing rods which would cause your significant other to dump you.

I actually fish.

certate custom 2500 r
although ive got all stellas now , a few years ago an old mate (Skinny R.I.P mate) put me on to certate 2500r customs and we landed some unbelievable fish over the next couple of years on them, spooled with 15 or 20lb braid or 10lb fireline they could land almost anything , i remember spending over 1.5 hours on a yellowfin off two rocks in the 40's that ate a floating mulie on 15lb braid and i got itto the boat and it cut me off 2m below the surface (on my trim tab) that fish would have been 35-40kg on a 2500 sized reel!. cheers

Catalina 4500HThe catalina
Catalina 4500H
The catalina has the same gears as the equivalent saltiga, but is a lot cheaper.
I use mine for bottom bashing off Dampier. The reel is high speed, which does give me a slight advantage when the sharks are around. I have so many times skull dragged trout and reds through the shark packs. Sadly, I also have so many times been hooked up to these bastard sharks. I basically lock up the drag and break my back trying to winch in these sharks which average about 7 feet long. The reel is still going great. Only problem was the handle knob got worn and was a bit sloppy, so I bought a power knob for $50 new bearings and all is great!

I nearly agree with Osprey.
I nearly agree with Osprey. Mine's the Alvey 651 C5 (the deep spool). I have 4 of them plus 2 x 650C5s. A couple of my 651s are over 30 years old and apart from drag washer and spring kits they have neede bugger all maintenance. I've used them for ballooning, beach fishing and bottom bouncing from the northern platforms. Great Aussie icons which I will never part with and never stop using.

I remember back in the early
I remember back in the early 70's I saved up for a Daiwa GS9, That was as strong as an ox, and I think you can still get them. I had an old Shakespeare that was as smooth as smooth, I had a beefed up Shimano TS4, and Mitchell 489 and these days I use Okuma V series reels. Rock solid and only a portion of the price of some of the top end reels.
Cheers

i have 2!
egg beater - Twinpower c5000
overhead - Talica 10
both smooth as and have knocked over great fish.
the old tyrnos 20 should also get a honourable mention as it has caught more than both, including my biggest red (just under 13kg) but probably weighs more than the other two combined.

I loved my old seamartin it was a bit like the ugly girl at school even though she was ugly you still liked her and hard to go past an alvey 650(any model) any reel you can load about 1 km of line onto is hard to go past that pair matched up to a stump puller rod was my weapon of choice up north

old school daiwa 7000 regal series and alvey 651
i have my dads 7000 regal series 75 model that has destroyed quite a few rays, aswel as sharks and lots of mulloway when my dad was still alive and still going strong,i occasionally set it for mulloway in the swan river when im chasing them, now days baitrunner 6500,torium 30, phluger salt 60 and 3 penn 950 are my reels of choice,i dont see the need to have 1000 plus reels just for sambos imo

Favourite OH = Shimano
Favourite OH = Shimano Trinidad 30A. Smooth drag, plenty of power and absolutely no play in the reel at all. Nice looking reel to top it off.
Favourite Spin = Shimano Stradic Ci4. For the price it can't be beat. I have the 2500 model, have used it to catch everything from squid and whiting to big skippy and snapper.
