Where would you go?

Hey guys,

Over the next couple of months, I plan on keeping an eye on the weather and possibly making a couple of weekend trips north of Perth with the boat in tow from Mandurah. Boat is a 5.6m Quinnie Classic.

Would love some peoples opinions on their favourite places to head north of Perth for a weekend of fishing.

Would probably head as far north as Dongara for a weekend.

Places that I am interested in are, Lancelin, Cervantes, Jurien, Green Head, Leeman and Dongara.

Things I am interested in are ease of boat launch, how far to travel to get to decent ground and other activities in the area (surf would be nice)

I have only visited Dongara when 10 or 11 years old and Grey a couple of times around 10 years ago so any advice is welcome!!

Thanks Guys

Dongara wins hands down!

Dongara for sure.  Heaps of options, heaps of good ground, beaches protected by north and south winds, great launching facilities and a pub overlooking the marina.  What more could you ask for??  Stay at the Big 4 on the beach and you're set.

I am looking at the same trip

I am looking at the same trip around May. Pretty well settled on Greenhead as I can still shoot up to Leeman or drive down to Jurien if I want somewhere a little more protected

Fishing gets better the more

Fishing gets better the more north you go as a general rule with the exception being around Jurien which gets fished pretty hard.

Launching at Jurien and Dongara are easiest with sheltered harbours and ramp facilities.  The rest of the coast will require two competent people to launch and retrieve as they are either beach launches or surge prone / slippery ramps but nonetheless you shouldn't have a problem if your comfortable with those conditions.

Lancelin has the most to offer surfwise with 4-5 decent breaks around the reef and the beachies at wedge to the north if you have a 4wd.

Jurien has waves behind the island and Dongara some average waves on the breakwall and the backbeach with better waves 30min north of town near flatrocks. There are other offshore waves along this coast but they need light winds and the right swell conditions as their a long way offshore plus close to seal colonies (sharky).

You shouldn't have trouble finding fish if you can get out to direction bank that runs from Lano to Jurien.  You'll find more fish in close from Greenhead north.

Jurien and Dongara are probably the nicest towns to stay in with more and better facilities and sheltered beaches if the wind is in.

 Awesome reply thanks legend!

Dongara looks like the go at the moment I think... Will probably have the Mrs in tow and I haven't done much beach launching myself so the easier the better!

Hey mate

Have pm d you some useful info re Dongara. Catch up with George & Ruth if possible and you will just about guarantee yourself success.  If you get out in the KC you'll know what all the fuss is about with these boats and prob or your Quinnie on the market. .. nothing handles the wind and short chop like these cats. .. and the mid west has plenty of  that. if I win Lotto tonite is be the first thing I purchased. George will get you into fish. .. He Ruth and I bagged out  with 8 Dhuies in 40 mins years back. .  That's how good it is and George knows his stuff.
