Sydney fella is heading over to WA for his first time! My gear sorted sound good?

Hey guys well Ive decided to spend a week in WA fishing! Not sure which charter to take yet... I want to go jigging, flick plastics for species and maybe try for some small gts on stickbaits ... I'm not bringing any dedicated popping gear... my big egrell can suffice.. its  a serious stick... like a nitro godzilla sort of...

The gear I'm bringing is only two reels.

Morethan Branzino 3000 loaded with Tasline 20lb (breaks at 32lbs). on an egrell s10 for light plastic work and loads of fun

and a SALTIGA 2010 4500 loaded with 50lb (300M) braid with a 7 foot egrell 8-15kg "Bear essential for deep plastics, poppers, stickbaits on the reefs and trolling big minnows and trolling up some big spanish or black jews"

I want to do a few things while im up there but have no idea where to start? leader to bring and what plastics ? size jigheads? and maybe some big poppers for reef species and a handful of jigs for the amberjacks....

2 reels. 3 Rods. and a whole lotta lures.

Anyone also recommend any charters ? I perfer just to fish by myself with the guide to be honest... Trying a few different things throughout the day...
bring the big fish on!

Just go to Exmouth.

Sounds like ya've got a fair idea mate.

Basically, just get yourself to Exmouth for the week if fishing is all you're doing..    Look up On-Strike Charters or Peak Sportfishing Adventures and you'll never look back.

You'll tick off a few bucketlist fish with either of them!

Good luck!

All depends on where in wa your planning on

There is 3000 plus  kms of coastline in wa if your after the Gt's then ex mouth or further north is where you want to go . If you want Dhuies , sambos , amberjacks , mackies and such Jurien bay  would be a good spot , head out with whitey on Seasport charters

As mentioned WA is a big place

And some off the things on your "Bucket list" is spread around WA. I suspect when you said Jigging you meant Sambos, and you mentioned amberjack. Well this is a southern endeavour, with the very odd amberjack caught up north.

GT as mentioned certainly Exmouth and beyond. I have found jigging up north NOT as good as southern jigging, with some of the price fish like red emperors pretty reluctant to take jigs for some reason. Soft plastic jigging definitely worth it with coral trout etc all on the list. Unfortunately still think when targetting reds bait well presented beats any artificial offering.

The rods/reels you mentioned will certainly be up to most tasks. However a Saltiga 4500 might be to light for a True GT pop. You hit one off the big ones and they might start to smoke that, but mostly you would be fine. I used a Stella SW10 000 for GT popping which I did infrequently of Dampier, and always hoped that I wouldnt hook a behemoth on that and the non true Popping samurai rod I used/matched it to. These gaints truely need Dogfight's, Stella 20Ks or at least Saltiga 6500s.

I fully agree with above. Go to Exxy and speak to Peak sportsfishing. On the $$$ with that choice.

u gonna pay to be the only bloke on a charter m8
Simo has a thread on here looking for deckies up at Exxie -see if u cant t up something with him

as for GT not many real big ones around exxie -your gear should be up to it, as for sambos/yellowtails around perth metro, maybe a member will take u out in their own boat -I certainly will, but am only home 4 weeks every 4weeks
also we are coming into salmon season down south -loads of fun, all u will need is a rental car

a trip to the kimberleys might be good for u PM me for names of 2operators up there- big GTs loads of queenies , jack, Spaniards etc

Thu, 2014-02-13 17:46

great to hear my two combos are up to the job....

guys a bit of indepth detail of the combos?? what to rig up the 50lb saltiga with on my 7" stick?? big stickbait?? livebaiting with it? maybe some trolling with bibbed minnows ??? what do the charters up there usually do ?

On the otherhand my morethan 3000 I will probly use 40lb leader with a metal.. smaller and light plastics chasing tuna for some fun.... its a serious, light rod that can handle loads of power.. Anyone own an egrell?

Cheers guys!

 pick a destination, of where

Thu, 2014-02-13 20:03

pick a destination, of where you plan to fish. I myself love exmouth, you have two outfits that suit the area.

soft plastics and metals off the beach covered

stick baits and poppers covered for the beach and rocks and both will suit the boat but how parabolic are they I dont know,as Egrell I always thought they were reels.

Exmouth is a great destination from light tackle shore and boat to heavy tackle shore and boat

thanks elsyd and to the

thanks elsyd and to the others...

what sort of species would I be encountering off the beacch and rocks spinning ?

Exmouth seems like the go to place for a mixture of variety of species that I can do alot with my both combos covering everything...

the branzino and saltiga need a real workout fishing is not what it really is up in WA... and while im in accomdation in exmouth which will probly be a beach front place can anyone suggest where to stay????. I understand the charters are going to be hella expensive by myself ... I'll obviously have some spare time when im not fishing and planning to chuck some stuff around from the beach front place....

I have a spare spool for the 4500 with 30lb braid and I also have a 10 foot custom 8-15 stick that throws 20grams- 65g. Just cant work plastics real well on it and poppers that  low close to the water level.

will the branzino 3000 suffice from the beach throwing around little halcos? plastics and spinning some 30gram metals? It would be awesome if I can get into some great fish off the beach that come in close to harrass bait!!

One more questions guys... is leaders .... Leader for the branzino 3000 , leader for the 50lb saltiga? Wire trace? any really common popper/plastic that is favourited in exmouth?

Sorry for the all the questions guys but I really appreciate it and all the helpful replys to the guys on here! great bunch!!

Not realy places on the beach

where you can walk to from home and chuck slices etc. Google Earth Exmouth and you will see it faces east on the Peninsula. The Exmouth gulf is protected waters and you tend to find that it is very shallow in or near town.

Good fun is to head to Bandegi, wade the flats on an incoming tide, about lower thigh deep and fling some slices, plastics, almost anything for heaps of fun size Trevally, queenies etc.

Shore based the Western side is certainly better, but it is a drive to get there.

Closet beachfront fisable (ie within walking distance) accomodation would have to be The Lighthouse Caravan Park, but it IS not beachfront. The only true Beachfront Accomodation is the Novotel Ningaloo Resort in the Marina area, and the beach infront is only good to average for whiting. The Marina can fish well and that is within a small walk from the resort. But the resort is Exxy in Exxy (pricey).

I would forget the idea that you can walk from your accomodation onto the beach and fish. You will need wheels.
