i love how all the people saying stela all the way have not even fished the new saltigas yet so how bout hearing from some one who has . personally i have owned both and the saltigas have stood up well above the stellas hence why i got rid of the stellas. just another ford vs holden style debate .

and see the metal shavings from the drag nut or the waering on the housing from the line laying gear or the oil from the magnetic clutch that got into the anti reverse bearing  or the fact that it has a plastic rotor  or that the shaft bearing spins in the housing , think i will stick with stella thanks

which I dont at the moment I would get a "dogfight". I think both are supreme reels but a pansy name like Stella vs a Dogfight. No contest IMO. But having said that LOL.

i think people are overlooking the fact that he still rates them(saltigas) in his top 5 reels. plus with the stellas most people upgrade the knob so theres extra money to be spent.  the saltigas do look a hell of a lot better but sounds like they cut corners to save $$$ so its a tough one. I own a stella and was looking at getting the new saltiga but will have to go back to the drawing board!

I think it's funny the dogfight is a high geared model!!

Read the review and glad I own 2 Stella SWs. I have the expedition (now older model) and love it to death so have had the opportunity to use both reels. I'm glad they upgraded the drag as that was a genuine problem but looks like they fell short a little and may have even taken a backward step in parts.

I doubt most of us would notice these issues as we wouldn't fish them enough or to their limits.

Also I actually prefer the asthetics of the Stella over a Saltiga.

STELLA VS SALTIGA

Thu, 2010-11-25 14:11

I have just ordered my new combo to replace the one lost behind rotto and went for a stella 20k again and a new model jigwrex(love the contoured finger grips!!) and although a stella man i got the new saltigas out (several models) of the case and played with them and although they feel a shit load better than the 4500/6500,3500 big game i used to have since swapping to stellas (3 sizes) i have never looked back and that article above just cemented it in my mind!!! roll on the insurance cheque!!!

Now thats interesting

Thu, 2010-11-25 16:00

I have the top Insurance Policy with CM. Last week I accidently broke a rod when something from the boat fell on it. Well it was a tackle box from the seat onto the Dropshot Pro 6-10 which was not in the rod holder, but ready for action as I was playing with Mantas. Had the rod propped up in the cab, box fell and its your uncle.

Might just give them a buzz. Certainly doesnt look like a fishing accident as it only snapped the ouside fibres on the opposite side a fishing high sticking etc would snap it.

imo the stellas were better then (i had 3 of the older model saltigas,3500 big game,4500,6500exp) then swapped to 3 stellas and was happy (i broke the 3500 twice ) but this topic could go on forever, after having both they are both awesome but i prefer the stella!!!!

thats what i was saying imo stella was and still is better but thats my "opinion" both are awesome but after having and fishing hard with 3 of each i can say i've tried them both sufficiently to have an informed opinion.

saltiga was designed more

Sat, 2010-11-27 15:59

saltiga was designed more for a jigging reel the design has lesser moving and lesser parts .

the high gear ratioe like the dogfight was made to compete in the market with stellas high ratio range.

but saltigas were invented specifically for jigging being a slimmer reel and hard cranking reel

hence why the stellas crap all over the smootheness compared to the saltigas.

daiwa has now made them smoother

but no way as smooth a stella

their is no number 1 place there both equal in the range

its jst indviduals choice which we liek better.

ahh......dont forget.....

Sun, 2010-11-28 07:39

Before the Dogfight there was Z6000GT.....

The Stellas actually was first released back in 97 with the first Stella F series.

The Saltiga was released in 2000...and like the new ones, they only released the 4000/4500 models first and it'll be like a year later before they decide to make it bigger.

Before the Saltiga, Daiwa's top end large spin reel was the TD-X 6000HIA which was designed purely for spinning. They never had jigging in mind until Shimano released the Stella.

Really, who's following who??

It'll be interesting to see how the new Saltigas hold up. The Stella SW are now well and trully proven.

Not just looks...

Tue, 2010-11-30 17:08

The spool is nothing like the original spool. This spool can hold upto 500m of PE4 where as the original holds 300m. It also has a different spool lip setup.

The handle itself also is longer than the stock one and the knob is round EVA with an ally cap. Comfortable and grippy handle.

So yeh....I wouldnt do it if it doesnt change the performance.

Wed, 2010-12-01 17:49

i had a play with the new daiwa saltiga 5000 today, one of our customers brang one in. in my honest opinion, the reel itself looks amazing, it looks like its built strong, but in saying that the smoothness isnt up to the stellas level...the only fault i could see with this reel was that the drag knob feels a bit plastically when your fiddling with it. personally, i would not pay the extra $250 or so on top of the stella...if the new saltiga was smoother then yes i would, but its not....i guess only time will tell.
