Spots for a 3m Dinghy

I just got myself a 3m Spindrift dingy with a 6hp Tohatsu mainly for river fishing but and am looking for some areas I can go to catch some squid, skippy, KGW and Herring on a calm day like this coming Sat. I live NOR so am thinking Hillarys just between the marina and Wanneroo Reef would be a good start but don't mind driving South either.

Can anyone offer me any advice on areas to check out?

Cheers guys. Only really plan to drift around for some squid and then burly up to see what else comes around but haven't been out on the open water in the dinghy yet so don't wanna go getting into trouble and want to stay pretty close to home on my first trip out.

Don't forget it needs to be regoed, need flares, vests etc on board and you need your fishing from a boat licence before you even think about using it anywhere other than fresh water.

hence why mine only sees the fresh.

Dont be scared about heading out in the 3m spindrift mate I have a 6hp an 15hp for mine an hit lumps an bumps on the backside of 3mile reef in it along side the big boats with the 15hp .. more stable then my old mans 4m tinny.

plenty of squid off freo an woodmans point good sized pinkies an skippy in cockburn sound an out of hillaries close by if you no where to look. Good close in kgw spots out of ocean reef marina less the a mile from shore.

As long as your confident on the water have the right saftey gear an dont go out in silly conditions you will be fine you will be alot safer the the guy in a hobie outback I towed in from on the 3mile who was shitting bricks after being nudged by a shark lol

Cheers Micro. Mate put the wind up me saying there's no way I should be taking it on open water and I'd get swamped by a bigger boat. In any case I am still only an hour into breaking in the outboard so gonna head down to Bicton area this weekend now to break it in and gain some more experience before I hit open water but yeah already got jackets, flares, bailing bucket, rego and and fishing licence.

Your Rig looks like a good set-up. It's about the same size as our Fishing Jetski's.

If you were heading South, ie Safety Bay/Cockburn Sound-there's plenty of different safe option's,depending on the wind direction on the day.

Don't forget you will also require a Epirb and have it registered.

Boating rules/laws -there is so much Safety Gear that you are required to carry,as I found out going from a Kayak to Jetski.

A good place to test the dinghy in semi open water is Matilda Bay. Boats of all sizes use that body of water and large cruisers will create enough wake to similate swell for your dinghy. If you get into trouble (motor issues or dinghy capsize etc), you will still be in protected waters.

Cheers Ashen. Took her down to Peppermint Grove on Sunday in 15-20kn winds and out to the middle of the river and back a couple of times and the double hull cuts through the chop beautifully.

After plenty of river trips

Wed, 2015-05-06 22:19

After plenty of river trips (including one trip out Freo Harbour to South Beach) I am going to take the dinghy out into the open water this weekend. Thinking about heading out from Ocean Reef and burleying up for a feed of herring and seeing if I can't find some whiting in some sand patches. Does anyone know if there's any squid around there or am I better off hitting up Hillarys for that?

 Head out from Hillarys

Thu, 2015-05-07 18:58

Head out from Hillarys around the back area of wanneroo reef.

Troll around small metal slices (up to 15g or so) around the back of the reef until you hook up and then keep casting in the area to find the school.

I've found a fast retrieve on or just below the surface generally works best, and if they are a bit hard to find get the lure in really close to the reef, even over the top of it on high tide.

In the big schools they are generally fairly small at around 22-24cm with the odd bigger model. The larger ones are usually right in the cover of the reef whereas the schools can be anywhere in the area W/NW of Wanneroo reef and are top fun on slices cranked as fast as you can.

Oh, and make sure you change the hooks to singles, much better hookup to landing ratio and doesn't destroy their whole face

Champion, thanks Hutch. I've got some Yo Zuri Crystal Minnows that do well trolling in the river so I'll try that as well as a slice. How do you attache your singles? To the split ring or with kevlar cord?

 No worries mate.

I just remove the trebles and replace them with singles on the spilt ring.

Some great slices are the $2 instinct ones (7 and 14g) in the bargain bin at bluewater tackleworld Scarborough. I have some that have had all the paint removed from thousands of hits and hookups, herring love them
