Sun, 2014-12-21 16:27

One thing you can be sure of through the summer is that there WILL be a seabreeze every day it's just a matter of what time. Up where I am you can see it approaching from miles away with the white caps.  Just have to hope for the small mid morning lulls or as we all know there are none

Oh and I'm saying nothing about next weekend

 Willy weather is rubbish.

I generally use a combination of Seabreeze and BOM. Seabreeze is good for a quick overview of what’s going on. I then check BOM, as their graphs tend to be a bit more accurate and are a bit more site specific -  http://www.bom.gov.au/marine/wind.shtml

I pretty much always check the live wind graphs also before heading out. For example, if the ‘forecast’ says it’s going to be offshore until midday and then a strong s/w in the arvo, but it’s already swung to southerly at 8am, you can probably assume it’s not going to be great out.

I used to use Seabreeze - nowadays I rely more on Willyweather. Seabreeze has been off far too many times

yep I check seabreeze for a general idea of wind strength and direction, if I like what I see i'll then check meteye for a more detailed forecast, I then check willyweather for re-assurance

Wed, 2014-12-24 13:03

I use MetEye all the time, exclusively.  It gives you wind speed, direction and wave height in 6km x 6km blocks, with three hourly predictions out to four days for waves and seven days for wind.

Within a three day day window so far I'd say it's accurate >90% of the time.

Sat on a presentation from the BOM earlier this year about it, it's by far the most advanced weather tool available.

Most of the other sites either use BOM data or overseas data.

Tue, 2014-12-23 19:43

usually a mix of BOM and seabreeze. Bom i find is much more accurate for offshore than seabreeze and vise versa for inshore. Always check the synoptic too, closer the bands stronger the wind, clockwise around lows and anti around highs. A good summer day has a trough sitting right on the coast or just off that will bring a northeasterly wind over the beach and will bring on a weaker seabreeze (as seabreeze is showing for saturday at the moment). the more south in the easterly usually the earlier and harder the breeze will come in.

Dont know the science behind it but years ago I was told if you get up in the morning and there is dew on your car you'll get an early southerly no matter how good the forecast is. hasn't been proven wrong yet.

 Bom marine winds forecast

Wed, 2014-12-24 00:03

Bom marine winds forecast animated for Perth local waters , found this to be far more accurate than anything else, got todays  winds almost spot on we cruised out to rotto to pull pots  , after 9 am winds died right off to almost glass off no whitecaps at all by lunchtime and seabreeze far more moderate tha willy or seabreeze predicted , if you went by what they forecast wouldnt have had  a nice day  or bagged out on crays.

Buoyweather today confusing

Wed, 2014-12-24 07:03

Looking at Buoyweather for Saturday, it shows 10 to 14 Easterly as breezy whitecapping in the morning, but the same wind speed in the afternoon (SW) shows as light winds ?. Is this possibly because you will get more whitecaps on a similiar speed Easterly than a South Westerly ?

 I would have thought

Wed, 2014-12-24 07:28

I would have thought unlikely.  but it could be caused by the water movement of the south westerly swell working against the easterly breeze as opposed working with it when it is from the south west.  similar to why the surfing is generally better on a light easterly as the breeze holds the wave up and shapes better.
