Salmon Season 2009
Submitted by Bodie on Wed, 2009-03-11 08:08
Adam possible to sticky this?
Thought its time to start a 2009 salmon thread with all the whats what, and where the fish are at!!!
Also somewhere to post your pictures of some good salmon catches.
Depending on Adams thoughts (Ive not asked him yet :) ), but might be possible to start a little comp, with the Best picture / capture of the season, and hoping Adam might be kind enough to throw in a fishwrecked shirt or 2 :) ... see how we go with that one!!
so where are the fish at?? anyone caught any? Ive heard some big schools going round Augusta on the weekend, anyone else got any info, or even better got into some fish yet??
Look forward to everyones responses, and happy salmon hunting!!!!
Cheers

Conto's had a couple of avg sized schools swim through over the weekend so they will be heading up the coast for sure even though they were swimming in a southerely direction. (still can't figure that one out). Always funtime of year ,autumn.

Depends on the conditions and how you like to fish
Someone like Honshu loves to use a small spin rod and reel and chase them with lures. Others will be using big beachrods and reels and throwing out ganged mulies, etc.
If they are in close enougfh and thw the conditoins are right, then using light gear certainly increases the sporting aspect.

a lot of the time it isnt so
a lot of the time it isnt so much what lure, or bait you use, because honestly samon in schoold will eat almost anything even if being chased by dolphins.
It comes down to casting distance really. Like colin said, if in close can chase with light flick rods if your keen.
Ive seen people catch salmon when fishing for whiting using prawns..they will eat almost anything!!!!!
always good to have a variety of lures about tho, when you find a school and there is 20 other people fishing aswell, the salmon can sometimes be a little warey of slices etc because so many are zipping through...good to have one or 2 that are totally different to the norm.
thanks for the Sticky..
Hope to see some reports soon!!!!

Not long now
According to http://www.marine.csiro.au/remotesensing/oceancurrents/Perth/latest.html the water temps have dropped a fair bit in the last week.
I've been checking this site out daily over the last 2 weeks. The temps have dropped a degree or two in the last two days or so.
Only a day or two ago all the water north of Cape Leeuwin was yellowish, around 23 degrees and the only colder water was east of Augusta.
Not far away now imo.

You should hopefully see them in about a month ozzy
Do you have a 4wd. If you do, White Hills is a pretyy good spot when the salmon come through.
Your best bet would be to head off early one morning, drive down to Hamelin Bay, Smiths Beach or somewhere like that. It would only be a few hours drive. They should be down that way now, or very soon.

Yep, Canal Rocks is a great spot You just have to ber careful
of the waves. Mulie, fresh cxaught whiting or herring fillets are all good. Metal lures are always worth a go.

dawesville salmon
i caught a few salmon/trout the other day. rapala xraps seem to drive them nuts, they wouldnt go near anything else, one decent size of about 3kg but the rest were just trout, still had quite prominent spots. but still great fun none the less on 4lb bream gear.

Was down at Meelup all day
Was down at Meelup all day Tues Wed Thurs with my work. Didnt even see a hint of a salmon. Each evening had the pro's come down and sit in the car park for a bit, scanning the beach then headed off. Guess they can't be to far off if the pro's are driving around with tinnie and net in tow.

Not even a hint of salmon
Not even a hint of salmon here at hamelin bay yet either
Water is very warm.
the locals have said only 1 school has been netted off the beach here last monday, but none have been caught by anglers.
Apparently big schools off Augusta but not coming in.
Dead here at the moment, still big swell and westerlies making it impossible to even get the boat out.

We did endup getting stuck with the whale situation down there.
Actually we found them and alerted everyone about it, ended up being a huge operation down there.
And for those who dont know, the piucture on the frotn of the west on tuesday was of all of us, taken by Tailor Marc.

Albany Salmon
I spent from 3pm till 7pm Saturday and 2pm till 6pm Sunday fishing the salmon holes in Albany and managed to bring pull in 2 herring and 1 whiting (not on my slamon rig but on the wifes rig).
The rock fsherman were pulling a few in, but then they had to contend with the black stuff - I am very wary of that stuff.
People I spoke to said the salmon had been running earlier on each day and that cables had also been productive.
I guess it just weant meant to be for me.

Nah, I didnt bring much gear cuz u have to climb over the rocks to get to the jetty now, not sure what they r building down there. Was planning on trying to get some herring and bait em up but with no herring showing i made good with the whiting. Didnt make for much sport when i got the salmon on my heavy gear though lol. still, im happy with a salmon, only ever got em off rotto b4. Plus i got to test out my airator. So I made it an early night and had a nice fresh feed for dinner :-)
