Remember that mills charter trip?

I forgot all about posting it up but yeh..

Got up 5 in the morning, got to hillaries around 6:30 and we checked in. Hour and a half boat drive later we went to the first 'successfull' spot. Not a bite, not even a nibble,

Then we went to several lumps and dropped (100-120m deep)

First drop on second spot! BAM!!! guy smashes a 88cm snapper and another guys lands a 82cm one. Another 2 people get 60 ish ones and my mate got a 46cm one (6kg :). I was still fishless, then we went to a larger coral lump and first drop. ZZZZZZZZZ wtf :S whats going on this is meant to be snapper, not taking 60lb line screeming off the reel. Fought like it was a guy with concrete shoes it took me 25 minutes to surface, WOAH! a shark!! then as it surfaced it freaked and dove FOR BOTTOM!! another 15 minutes i brought him up and gaffed him. Bloody massive and my arms were killing me.. meanwhile others are still gettin snapper and things. I wanted to throw the shark back personally but by the time i sat down the kind men of the charters had already hacked it up for me ^_^. Didn't get a chance to weigh it till i got home. My mate ben got a baldie and you would not believe it but this woman landed a HUGE GT !!! YES OFF HILLARIES!! it was bigger than her, struggled on 60lb line off the alvey, Then after 10 minutes photos they threw it back. I was still recovering from the shark lol, i must be weak or something how can u fishos do it!.

Few more drops and there was only about 3 people fishless, everyone had about 2 snapper to their name over the 5kg mark, then to top it all off the dunny door flew open on a guy in the dunny lol ... I happened to be looking towards the front of the boat at the time :'(

Went home, (parents went denmark for 3 days) so it was just me alone and i had to skin it and fillet it BUT!! i weighed the carcass first. 36.5kg :) :)

The funnyest bit was that we had to catch the train back to gosnells, with this shark carcass over my shoulder. Shoulda seen the attention i got from the transit guards ^_^ .

Well worth 160$ best skipper iv ever met too, Going to go again later this year.

you're lucky man:) Most people i know have a crap time:(

When i went on mills my mate caught a sambo nice big one too, didn't even ask us if we wanted it. It was real screwed up gaffed to sh*t in the icebox when we got back to the main boat area coz we got shoved on the bow of the boat. We were lucky enough to get 2 snappe 2 nannies and a sambo between us. A lot of people were fishless tho:(

But i'm more commenting on the whether you want to keep it part. Maybe our case the fish was kinda too bad to be put back..

Sounded like a great trip. You tell a good story. How long was this shark? What kind of shark was it?

Yeah 46 cm for 6kg is a bit of a stretch...

Would love to see the pic/any pic of a GT caught off hilaries though! Will be throwing poppers off the marina groyne all weekend!

Just would have called it for under/around 2. Don't let that take anything away from your report though. Always nice to hear enthusiastic feedback.

That would have been a great look carrying a shark on the train. Did the guards ask for a ticket for it?

Have you seen what Bronze Whaler is worth in the fish shops these days? It's something like $30 or $40 a kilo! He's lucky he didn't get clubbed over the head for it when he was on the trainLaughing

Good story, flangies....very well told and it's nice to see a positive report from a metro charter!

I wouldn't think you would catch dhuies as far north as canarvon or barri as far south as exmouth, but you do.
You get volitan lionfish in the cockburn sound! They are a tropical spiecies.

All im saying is that you never know what is around.
The currents that come from up north must carry some interseting fish with it. I hear what ya saying i would belive it more if i saw a pic, but i reckon there's heaps of stuff in the ocean we wouldnt expect.

It certainly has been a warm

Sat, 2008-06-07 19:30

It certainly has been a warm water year, although early season at the Fads was a lot quieter for mahis than usual...remember the northern bluefin at the mole a couple of weeks ago? Last two times out near Rotto we got into some blacktip sharks and a lot more striped tuna than usual. And I know firsthand that there have been long toms in the Dawesville Cut. And don't forget about all those slender sunfish (a tropical species) beaching themselves on the South Coast. We can all agree that the metro salmon run this year has been VERY ordinary.

Having said that, and knowing that GT's prefer shallow, reefy ground and sharp dropoffs, a metro charter boat would be unlikely to be fishing in those types of areas so I'll lean towards Alfred's diagnosis of "large skippy"!

A few were caught 5-6 years ago....mostly near/in front  the Bar-b-ques...and a couple up near diamond island.....

Have found quiet a few illegal chook netting traps up there over the last 3-4 years.....

John the plumber who does the holiday house bookings hasnt seen one for 4-5 years....

You can find little black crabs a fair way up the river under dead wood etc....they arent baby muddies.....

Hows the couch spess....comfortable?????...kids cry a lot eh :)

Nice report and as for the GT - I am with harro, anything can happen down this way these days.

So far as unusual captures go out of Perth myself and the old man have caught 2 size spangled emperor and a small golden trevally and that was a long time ago. So a GT is definately not out of the question.

Yep, currents are a funky thing.  We are getting pink snapper and blue manners up this way at the moment.  Wouldn't suprise me one bit, I think you need to open your eyes a bit more Brenz.  You get spaniards, mud crabs, marlin in Perth, why not gts?

The photos of it will probly be out by now so keep your eyes open, i am no liar :(

The skipper said it was because the water was too warm for this kind of year and then blamed it on global warming and climate change etc but i was more interested in the fish, She skull dragged it in on the alvey spooled with 60lb line.. took no more than 10 minutes for 120m or water.
