Redfin

Because it's the school holidays, I wanted to try fishing freshwater for the first time. I live in perth metro and am willing to travel for 1.5 hours at the most. Does anybody know any good Redfin spots? I have seen most minnows are good for Redfin and the odd trout.

Are the redfin that prolific?

Are the redfin that prolific? I never realised. Are they in almost all medium to largish waterways? Ive never caught or seen one and always thought they were hard to find.

this time of year I recommend a deeper diving lure or SP. more water means deeper rivers and dams and redfin like to sit on the bottom.

Wes is on the money mate.

Wes is on the money mate. Also could try the Hotham River near Boddington. I used to catch heaps there growing up. I haven't fished there for years but I couldn't see there numbers depleting the way they can breed. I caught a few in the Murray a couple of months ago using live gilgies under a float after a few hours of no success fishing minnow lures

If you want numbers, use trout spinners or smallish hard bodies. If you want size use SP's fished slowly right in the snags. Dwellingup has quite a few but they are generally small.

I know there are no limits to redfin because they are feral but how big is small? If they are really tiny do you throw me back because you feel bad?

I dont often feel bad for fish, all reddies taste good but if very small just chuck them over your shoulder, and the trout spinners and HB's dont often (in my case) catch fish over 25cm

I know it is a bit far, but when you have more time hit the Warren River. It would be the best river in the south west for redfin.

If your going to 'just chuck them over your shoulder' kill them first. In the Warren you will regularly get fish over 35cm on harbodies.

My lure of choice is the Halco Laser Pro 45.
