Ocean Reef Upgrade

My friend took this photo of the upgraded ramps at ocean reef. They've finished the first half and are now working on the second half.

I used the ramp on Sunday. I found that the concrete section was too high to climb up when your standing near the water line, so you need a mooring line long enough so you can walk up to where the concrete is lower.

There was also a couple of groups of people fishing off the ramp. There's now space for people to set up camp with deck chairs etc. So there's probably going to be more land based people using the pontoons.

They've also bumped the price up to $9 for parking.

Thanks for the update and christ if the gap wasnt bad enough! What is the purpose of this. Are they trying to encourage people to drive their boats onto their trailers? They obviously didnt consult with ramp users!

definitely an improvement on the previous but I see they have left those bits of concrete in that stop you getting your trailer too close to the jetty????? why they have to be so wide I don't understand a small buffer like the ones at hillarys are all that's required to protect the jetty, it just makes it tougher for the solo retrieve and they usually end up pretty slippery from algae
filleting table is great news

Yeah looking at that

No good for solo same as two rocks! what's the idea of that would only stop you from hitting the jetty with your trailer not ramming it with a boat.

Tue, 2015-08-04 08:55

Dosen't seem to be enough pole's to tye up to,Iknow they have the cleats in the platform. You come in on a good cross wind by yourself you need something to grab on to.

Is there any rubber or padding on the side of them.

I agree, I launch and retreive on my own a lot and rely on something to grab onto when coming in and there is a bit of wind pushing you the other way.  I like the idea of a filleting table and I can live with the $9. At the Leeuwin barrack in Freo it cost $12 for the day and no fillet table there.

i hate these jettys,

you either got to use fenders or keep your boat of the bump rubber, the rubber has left a nice scratch mark through my stickers on the side of the boat from where a wave come past.(at another ramp the same)

also if you tie it up tight, the rubber smacks againts you gunna rubber in a up and down moition, also watch the cleats, as a mate whith a very large flared bow type boat come down onto one of the cleats and took a big hunk of glass out of his boat.

might be ok now while new and soft, but wait till it goes hard and gets a few holes in it.

ok on my boat cause the paint is faded now, but when i first had it i was pissed off.

will still have to use it because it one of my fav spots, the parking fee is getting a bit out there, but still not as bad as fremantle!!

I reckon they are great....

Tue, 2015-08-04 09:17

Having a very high sided boat, I've lost plenty of paint from other ramps, but these are very foregiving.

Also great for my crew to step off onto when coming alongside, unlike the old ones where there always seemed to be a fair step up or step down, depending on the tide, and of course you needed to be fleet footed to stay on the narrow planks.

The cleats angle inwards, so it would not be possible for 99% of boats to hit them.

Launched a couple of time now and there is a lot to like about them.

Also watched a guy launch a 6.8 Haines Patriot solo on Sunday....made it look real easy

I like the long jetties, they

Tue, 2015-08-04 10:53

I like the long jetties, they are a big improvement on the old ones that were long overdue to be replaced.
Lots of room to tie up more boats & to walk past folks.
From my Sea Rescue point of view, I think the first 2 northern end jetties could be slightly shorter to allow us more room to be able to enter our bay & still pull the towed vessel into the next bay using the larger of our two Rescue boats.
If there are boats tied up on the west jetty opposite the ramps, it cuts down the amount of room we have to maneuver both ours & the towed vessel.
My thoughts only.

Looks bloody good to me. Nice wide decks, good tie off points, good rails, floating, and a fish cleaning station!

Biggest plus is being long enough so that those with bigger boats have more room.

Well done I reckon.

They look like the pontoons used at Kalbarri

Tue, 2015-08-11 10:13

Photo is a bit distant, but, if the cleats are mounted as close to the edge of the pontoon as they are up here, it is a definite problem for some boats, as fisho-ron remarked. My Dommie has a very flared bow, the cleats get under  and mark the hull for the forward quarter of the boats length, so you have to be very careful. Slab sided plate boats don't have the issue. I launch solo a lot, works ok for me, apart from that, you have to tie up so they can't get under the front, then have to keep the bow out as you guide towards the trailer.

Royalties for regions?

Tue, 2015-08-11 10:19

Sh#t loads better than the shit facilities up here in Broome-- The Royalties for Regions scheme can't be working for you up there, even Augusta has a first-class facility nowadays? Maybe they are scared off by the fact that there is so much pent-up demand for a marina and launching facilities that anything they build will need to be massive, or it will be overcrowded from day 1?

Barnett spat the dummy up

Tue, 2015-08-11 12:23

Barnett spat the dummy up here because woodside pulled out and he didn't get his member voted in up here. Marina is long overdue here and he won't get in up here while we don't have one he has pissed a lot of people off. We are seeing people having to park a long way from the ramp on most days and its only a matter of time before some one is seriously hurt whilst holding a boat waiting 20 minutes for the trailer to get there. As for royalties for regions that seems to stop at the Pilbara unless your indiginuos.

Bloody whingers lol, come and use a sand ramp a year and see how much of a luxury this is. But I do agree with some of the comment, it needs some posts for when coming in for something to grab and tie onto. Filleting station is great and for $9 all maintained I reckon is a fair price.

Broome- major tourist centre

Tue, 2015-08-11 14:48

That's pretty bad, Broome is a major centre for the grey nomad brigade and for people from over east coming to the west for some gammas and some good fishing . Putting in a new and major launching facility would earn a lot of brownie points I think.

Hey, I know the answer to your problem, ask for the facility to be equipped with a musical toilet (like Busso) and you will get the new ramp etc as quick as. lol

Seriously though, what about asking RECFISHWEST to take up the cause for you.

RECFISHWEST are pushing for

Wed, 2015-08-12 07:58

RECFISHWEST are pushing for us but Barnett is a pig headed prick that has spat his big dummy and would rather see development in the centre of perth at all costs and f@#k everyone else. They will only remember him for that work and not some boat facility when he gets voted out. Its not so much a facility for the grey nomads as most launch from gantheame point beach in their tinnies but more for the general local boaties that have to risk lives and vehicles with any sort of wind and swell, not to mention the tourism it would generate from hedland and Karratha fishos coming here for holidays etc.

Looks good!

Tue, 2015-08-11 15:34

Most modern jetties are similar.  99% of people won't have an issue with the jetty cleats, and if your bow has that much flair you can always use fenders.

I agree on the buffer strip, that seems way to wide, especially if you are trying to get the bow onto the trailer with wind pushing you into the jetty.

Broome is a tough one - while it is a popular tourist spot I think the overall usage wouldn't be that high, and the huge tidal range doesn't make it easy to build a cost effective ramp.

Karratha/Dampier has much the same tidal range

Wed, 2015-08-12 08:45

They get almost as much range as Broome but still manage to have useable ramps. And it would get plenty of use, as people are currently put off by what is on offer.    In my earlier post, when I mentioned Royalties for Regions, I personally held the opinion that Broome certainly hadn't helped themselves by the opposition to James Price Point,  didn't bring it up, but, since you mention it...Of course, those facilities in the Pilbara went in in the early days as iron ore ramped up, would have been built by local co-operation, people and businesses donating time and labour, I'll bet Hammersley Iron contributed a fair bit of it, whether they knew it or not

Love these jetties

Not an issue at all with grabbing and tying on. This is exactly like the jetties at Dampier Fishing Club and I just loved them. The concrete protection block is not in Dampier and makes no sense to me here as even a dick backer is not going to smack the jetties at any significant angle to cause any harm.
